Goodfellow, Eagles share 2nd at Klocke golf

JD Goodfellow and the Kirkwood Eagles tied for second place at the Klocke Family Classic golf tournament at Hunters Ridge Sunday.

Goodfellow, a sophomore from Iowa City, finished at even-par 144 for the 36-hole tournament and shared second place in the individual standings with Ricky Sanders of Indian Hills.

Kirkwood tied Mount Mercy for second place in the team standings at  23-over 599. Kirkwood entered two teams in the tournament and its other squad finished fourth, just a shot behind the runners-up.

Julien Sale of Indian Hills claimed medalist honors at 6-under 138 and led his team to the championship by 16 shots.

George Appleseth of Kirkwood tied for fifth place at 2-over 146.

No. 11 Eagles finish 2-2 in tourney

The 11th-ranked Kirkwood women's volleyball team split its two matches  in the Kirkwood tournament Saturday and finished with a 2-2 record in the event at Johnson Hall.

The Eagles were swept by top-ranked Parkland, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18, in  their first match Saturday, then rebounded with a 25-20, 28-26, 25-15 verdict over ninth-ranked McHenry County.

All four of Kirkwood's matches in the tournament were against ranked opponents.

Ady Wintermote led the Eagles Saturday with 19 kills in the two matches. Abbi Tunis had 13 kills, Margaret Micka 11, Nyadoar Gatwech 10 and McKenzie Petersen eight.

Grace Swenning collected 29 assists and Lauren Keane had 28. Micka led Kirkwood in digs with 21, followed by Brianna Eberhardt (20), Wintermote (15) and Keane (13).

Petersen blocked 11 shots Saturday. Gatwech blocked six, Micka five and Haleigh Durnin four.

Parkland won all four of its matches to win the tournament.

Gatwech sparks rally by No. 11 Eagles

The Kirkwood women's volleyball team was being blitzed by sixth-ranked Sauk Valley in the Kirkwood tournament Friday night when Coach Jill Williams plucked Nyadoar Gatwech off the end of the bench to see if she might be able to light a fire.

The 6-foot-3 freshman from Marshalltown, who had played briefly in only one match all season, helped turned the contest around.

The 11th-ranked Eagles rallied for a 15-25, 12-25, 25-18, 25-19, 18-16 victory after being thoroughly outplayed by Sauk Valley in the first two sets.

Gatwech entered the match in the third set and immediately made a big impact. She finished with five blocks and altered several other shots at key moments.

Williams said her impact was "huge."

"Their outside hitters had just been tearing us up," said Williams.  "They had to alter their shots and make some changes (with Gatwech on  the floor) because she does have more size. It gave us a spark, we  found our energy.

No. 11 Eagles sweep NIACC in volleyball

MASON CITY - The 11th-ranked Kirkwood women's volleyball team blitzed NIACC, 25-19, 25-11, 25-21, in a conference match in Mason City Wednesday night.

Alexa Whipple led the Eagles with 11 kills and 10 digs. Margaret Micka and Ady Wintermote had eight kills.

Lauren Keane rolled up 20 assists and Grace Swenning had 11. McKenzie Petersen blocked seven shots.

Kirkwood raised its records to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.

No. 7 Eagles split matches in Nebraska

NORFOLK, Neb. - The seventh-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team split its four matches at the Northeast Community College tournament this weekend.

On Friday, the Eagles defeated Southeast Community College 3-1 and lost to Colby College 3-2.

On Saturday, the Eagles blanked Marshalltown 3-0 and lost to Fort Scott 3-2 after taking a 2-0 lead.

The split left Kirkwood with a 7-3 record.

Ady Wintermote led Kirkwood in the tournament with 50 kills. Alexa Whipple had 41 kills and Margaret Micka finished with 35.

Lauren Keane collected 95 assists in the tournament and Grace Swenning had 42.

Brianna Eberhrdt led the Eagles with 51 digs. Micka had 44 digs, Whipple 42 and Keane 36.

Abbi Tunis finished with 14 blocks. Haleigh Durnin had nine blocks, Wintermote eight and Keane five.

Comeback Kids trim DMACC in 5 sets

Maybe the Kirkwood Eagles are too young to know when they're licked and about to lose.

Or maybe they don't care.

The Comeback Kids rallied from a five-point deficit in the final set Wednesday night and escaped the DMACC Bears 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 19-17 in an exciting Iowa Community College Athletic Conference volleyball match at Johnson Hall.

The seventh-ranked Eagles trailed the 11th-ranked Bears, 12-7, in the fifth set and were just three points away from defeat.

They staged a magnificent rally at that point, staved off two match points and snared the victory before a lively crowd.

"We just have fight in us," said sophomore Margaret Micka, one of the few experienced players on the team. "That's the way we practice. We give 100 percent all the time and I think that's what we did tonight."

DMACC could have won the match when they served with a 15-14 lead in the final set, but McKenzie Petersen and Ady Wintermote blocked a shot to tie the game at 15-15.

No. 7 Eagles finish 3-1 at Wisconsin Dells

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - The seventh-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team  won both of its matches Saturday to finish with a 3-1 record at the  Wisconsin Dells tournament.

The Eagles defeated Harper College, 25-20, 19-25, 25-7, 26-24, and  rallied to top Carl Sandburg, 23-25, 29-27, 25-14, 25-22.

Margaret Micka led Kirkwood against Harper College with 12 kills and  14 digs. Alexa Whipple had eight kills and 11 digs. Abbi Tunis  finished with six kills and Ady Wintermote had five.

Grace Swenning collected 16 assists against Harper and Lauren Keane  had 14. Whipple had four aces and McKenzie Petersen blocked six shots.

Micka had 10 more kills against Carl Sandburg. Tunis had nine kills,  Wintermote seven, Hailey Borgmeyer six and Petersen five.

Keane rolled up 20 assists against Sandburg and Swenning had 14.  Swenning also had four aces. Brianna Eberhardt provided 16 digs and  Keane finished with 15. Wintermote and Haleigh Durnin blocked five  shots.

Kirkwood raised its record to 4-1.

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - The seventh-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team split its two matches at the Wisconsin Dells tournament Friday.

The Eagles lost to third-ranked Owens, 3-0, and rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Henry Ford.

Margaret Micka led Kirkwood with 11 kills against Owens. Ady Wintermote had six kills and Haleigh Durnin had five. Lauren Keane rolled up 21 assists, Micka had 10 digs and Durnin had seven blocks.

Alexa Whipple collected 14 kills against Henry Ford. Micka had nine kills for the Eagles (2-1). Grace Swenning dished out 20 assists and Micka had 11 digs.

The tournament continues Saturday.

Young Eagles sweep GV in 2017 opener

Scrappy. Athletic. Young.

That's the early scouting report for the Kirkwood women's volleyball team for the 2017 campaign.

The seventh-ranked Eagles swept the Grand View junior varsity, 25-14, 25-9, 25-18 in the season opener Wednesday night with a balanced attack at Johnson Hall.

The youthful Eagles feature 11 freshmen and only three sophomores on the club, but Coach Jill Williams liked what she saw after three weeks of camps and practices.

"I liked the energy, I liked the effort, I liked the bounce," she said after the match.

Kirkwood has finished seventh in the NJCAA Division II national tournament the last two years and Williams thinks she has another competitive team this season.
