Mount Mercy sweeps No. 10 Clarke

Mary Kay Van Oort had a master plan on how to build a successful men's  volleyball program at Mount Mercy when she was hired in August of  2015, but she might have to revise that blueprint now.

The Mustangs are ahead of schedule.

Mount Mercy continued its surge in Year 3 of the program Thursday  night by sweeping 10th-ranked Clarke, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17, in a Heart  of America Conference match at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs upset top-ranked Grand View last week and are now 10-4  overall, bidding to enter the rankings themselves.

"My players would be disappointed to hear me say that this is faster  than I expected it to go, to get to this level," Van Oort remarked. "I  have a couple of players who from Day 1 here expressly thought they  should win the national championship. And that helps, to have some of  that attitude.

"I'm an optimistic person," she continued, "but I'm also a little bit  realistic. I know the competition out there is really good and exciting.

Mustangs drop 2 tight games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Mount Mercy softball team began the season  with a pair of excruciating defeats at the RossMatt Tournament  Thursday at the Diamondplex Softball Facility in Florida.

The Mustangs lost to 22nd-ranked Southeastern University, 7-5, after building a 5-4 lead after five innings in their first game.

Mount Mercy fell to Olivet Nazarene, 13-11, in eight innings in the second contest.

Mustangs flattened by Grand View

DES MOINES - The Mount Mercy men's basketball team struggled in just about every phase of the game Wednesday night.

The result was a punishing loss to Grand View, 89-68, in a Heart of America Conference affair in Des Moines.

The Mustangs (14-12, 9-11) never led in the ballgame and fell behind by 31 points.

Antwain Strong led Mount Mercy with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Mike Evans scored 11 points.

The Mustangs lead all NAIA teams with an average of 13.5 3-pointers per game, but they were only 6 of 29 against Grand View.
