Manning wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Brendon Manning is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Manning, a 6-foot-4 forward, is one of the most improved basketball players in the Metro area this season. He averaged just 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 11 games last year and missed the second half of the campaign with a broken ankle, but he has become one of the leaders for the Cougars this year.

Manning enjoyed three big games for Kennedy this past week as the Cougars raised their record to 5-1 with three straight victories.

Chloe Rice wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion freshman Chloe Rice is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Rice, a 5-foot-10 guard, is one of the top young basketball players in the state. She poured in 28 points in a 58-56 loss to Clear Creek-Amana Tuesday and is averaging 12.5 points for the season.

Rice is already being followed by NCAA Division I colleges who might like to recruit her, including several of the top schools in Iowa.

Brenden Baker wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Brenden Baker is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Baker is one of the top wrestlers in the state and is a key ingredient for the J-Hawks, who are ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by The Predicament.

Baker missed the first week of the season while recovering from four broken toes on his left foot, suffered in a gymnastics accident three months ago, but he returned to wrestling in fine form.

Lela Sellers wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior Lela Sellers is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Sellers transferred to Kennedy from a high school in Minnesota this year and has made an immediate impact with the basketball team. The lanky 5-foot-11 guard is averaging 17.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.7 steals through six games.

Kennedy has compiled a 5-1 record so far and is ranked 10th in Class 5A.

Rylee Blood wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie junior Rylee Blood is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Blood is one of the top bowlers in the state with a 216.3 game average and a 432.5 series average this season. She ranks No. 1 in the Metro area and No. 2 in the state in both categories.

Blood has rolled the best game in the state this year with a 267 for the Prairie Hawks, who have gotten off to a 2-0 start with victories over Iowa City West and Linn-Mar.

Blood was named the Athlete of the Year on the All-Metro Bowling Team last year and was named the Co-Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference in the Valley Division.
