Tavian Patrick wins Metro Spotlight Award

Tavian Patrick of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Patrick rushed for 212 yards and a 73-yard touchdown Friday night as the top-ranked Warriors defeated Muscatine, 42-21, in their Class 4A district opener at Kingston Stadium.

Patrick, a 5-foot-8 junior, has carried the ball 48 times for 589 yards and three touchdowns. He also has scored on a punt return.

Patrick ranks fifth in Class 4A with his 589 yards. He is averaging an eye-popping 12.3 yards per carry and has runs this season of 76, 73 and 70 yards. He has three 100-yard games this year with 212 against Muscatine, 139 against Jefferson and 123 against Iowa City West.

Wash swimmers win Metro Spotlight Award

Kaitlyn Nemickas, Caitlin Sievers, Lauren Havertape and Logan Eckhardt of the Washington swimming team are the Metro Spotlight winners for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

The four Warriors set a meet record in the 200 medley relay Saturday to help Washington win the team championship at the Des Moines Lincoln Invitational by 120 points. The Warriors were timed in 1 minute, 56.8 seconds, just a shade behind their season-best time of 1:55.72 that ranks 12th in the state.

Nemickas and Havertape were triple-winners in Des Moines. Nemickas won the 100 backstroke and swam on the triumphant 200 freestyle relay. Havertape claimed the 100 butterfly and swam on the 200 freestyle relay.

Sarah Renner wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar senior Sarah Renner is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Renner is an outstanding student-athlete at Linn-Mar who excels in volleyball, track and the classroom, where she carries a 4.1 GPA with a heavy load of Advanced Placement courses.

Renner, 5-foot-11, has been a three-year starter on the Linn-Mar volleyball team. She has contributed to a balanced attack with 55 kills, 163 assists, 67 digs, 42 blocks, five aces and a 94.2 percentage on her serves (81 of 86). The Lions are enjoying a successful season with a 14-5 record.

Sean Murphy wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier junior Sean Murphy has won the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Murphy, a 5-foot-9 junior, returned two kickoffs for a touchdowns Friday night as the Class 3A top-ranked Saints defeated DeWitt Central, 59-3, in a district game in DeWitt.

Murphy raced 96 yards for a touchdown with the opening kickoff. He was untouched behind a bevy of blockers for Xavier, which has a tradition of successful special teams.

Kate Busswitz wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie junior Kate Busswitz is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Busswitz, who stands 6-foot-1, is one of the top volleyball players in the Mississippi Valley Conference and has committed to play at the University of Northern Iowa.

Busswitz helped Prairie win the Linn-Mar Invitational Saturday, capped by a 21-14, 21-12 victory over sixth-ranked Linn-Mar in the finals. The Hawks won six straight matches in the day-long tournament.
