Famiek Cook wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Famiek Cook is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Cook won two events at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor track meet in Cedar Falls last Monday. He captured the 200 meter dash in 23.21 seconds and won the long jump at 21 feet, 3 inches.

Cook enjoyed a highly successful season with the Kennedy track team last year as a junior. He helped the Cougars place second in the 4x200 relay and second in the shuttle hurdle relay at the Class 4A state meet and finished third in the long jump at 22-1 3/4. Kennedy finished fourth in the team standings.

Ranschau sisters win Metro Spotlight Award

Madison Ranschau and her sister Abbie are the co-winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports ReportĀ announced Sunday.

Madison, a senior, and Abbie, a sophomore, are two of the top athletes on the Cedar Rapids Jefferson track team that ranks among the best in the state. Both of them are off to a good start this season.

Madison Ranschau won the 55 meter hurdles at the University of Dubuque indoor meet on Friday and captured the 60 meter hurdles at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor meet last Tuesday. She also ran on the triumphant 4x100 relay and shuttle hurdle relay at the MVC meet.

Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar sophomore Stephanie Jenks is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks, a premier distance runner and triathlete, becomes the first two-time winner of the award since the Metro Spotlight series began in August.

Jenks enjoyed a remarkable string of success during a seven-day period this month.

Pritts wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Mitch Pritts is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Pritts has established himself as one of the top distance runners in Iowa. He helped Prairie capture the Class 4A state cross country title last fall in Fort Dodge and placed in three events at the Class 4A state track meet last May.

Pritts began the 2014 season by winning the 3200 in 9:44.59 at the Dickinson Relays in Cedar Falls on Tuesday.

Drew Heitland wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Drew Heitland is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Heitland, a 6-foot-4 senior, is the starting center for the Kennedy basketball team that will face Sioux City North in the Class 4A state tournament Wednesday night in Des Moines.

Heitland is averaging 8.2 points and a team-best 5.5 rebounds for the Cougars (18-5). He is shooting 51.1 percent from the field and gives Kennedy a strong defender near the basket.
