Kuch wins Metro Spotlight award

Katie Kuch from Prairie High School has been named the Metro Spotlight female athlete of the week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

Kuch helped the Hawks reach the Class 5A state softball tournament this season for the first time in school history as their star pitcher. She compiled a 22-9 record and 2.36 ERA, with 120 strikeouts in 205 innings pitched as a senior.

Kuch was honored as the Valley Division Player of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference. She was named first team all-Metro and third team all-state.

Nominate prep athletes for 'Metro Spotlight'

It's time for parents, grandparents, coaches, athletic directors, teachers, teammates and fans to brag a little bit about their favorite high school athletes and nominate them for the "Metro Spotlight" award on the Metro Sports Report website.

The new weekly feature will begin on Monday, Aug. 5 and will run during the entire course of the 2013-14 school year. There will be one male and one female winner each week.

The "Metro Spotlight" is being sponsored by Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, which is located at 4640 1st Avenue NE in Cedar Rapids.

Stroschein wins Metro Spotlight award

Austin Stroschein of Linn-Mar High School has been named the first winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school boys, presented by the Metro Sports Report.

Stroschein helped the Lions reach the Class 4A state baseball tournament this year and finish with a 27-16 record. He compiled an 8-1 record and 1.63 ERA on the mound and hit .365 with a home run and 27 RBIs at the plate.

Stroschein was named a first-team pitcher on the Mississippi Valley Conference all-star team and also made the first team on the Class 4A all-district squad. He will continue his baseball career at DMACC next season.

Hansen wins Metro Spotlight award

Maddie Hansen of Cedar Rapids Jefferson has been named the first winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school girls, as presented by the Metro Sports Report.

Hansen, a power-hitting catcher, helped the J-Hawks finish fifth in the Class 5A state tournament this year and compile a 33-12 record.

Hansen hit .500 with seven home runs and 69 RBIs as a sophomore. She led the Mississippi Valley Conference and Class 5A in RBIs and finished second overall in the state. She's also an accomplished catcher and committed only one error for a fielding percentage of .997.
