Nic Uhlir wins Metro Spotlight Award

Nic Uhlir of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Uhlir, a senior guard, is a key member of the Linn-Mar boys basketball team that will face Kennedy in the Class 4A substate finals Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The sixth-ranked Lions enter the game with an 18-4 record and boast a 10-1 mark in their last 11 outings. The ninth-ranked Cougars enter the game with a 17-5 record and sport a 9-1 mark in their last 10 games.

Mia Laube wins Metro Spotlight Award

Mia Laube of Marion is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Laube is a member of a strong freshman class that has helped Marion High School reach the finals of the Class 4A regional basketball tournament. The 13th-ranked Indians (17-5) will face fifth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock (22-0) in the regional finals Tuesday night at Vinton, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Des Moines.

Laube matched her career-high with 21 points Saturday night when Marion defeated West Delaware, 63-48, in the regional semifinals. She also had 21 points earlier this season against Benton Community.

Kuehl, Cadena share Metro Spotlight Award

Dalton Kuehl of Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Jarod Cadena of Prairie are the co-winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Kuehl and Cadena both finished second at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament in Des Moines Saturday night, helping their teams to high finishes in the overall standings.

Kuehl, ranked second in the state at 285 pounds, pinned Blake Moser of Iowa City West in the first round in 1:59. He beat eighth-ranked Collin Olson of Ankeny Centennial, 3-1, in the quarterfinals and pinned third-ranked Tyler Clark of Clinton in the semifinals in 2:57.

Bre Smith wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion junior Bre Smith is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith is one of the top bowlers in the state for the Marion Indians and she enjoyed a fantastic day on Friday at Cobra Lanes in Farley in a Wamac Conference meet against Western Dubuque.

She rolled games of 258 and 230 for a 488 series, which is the sixth-best series in the state this season. Her 258 matched the 13th-best single game of the season.

Burger wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier junior Mitchell Burger is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Burger has been a key player for the Xavier basketball team all season, but he's played some of his best basketball for the Saints the past three weeks.

He scored 21 points and grabbed four rebounds when Xavier upset Class 4A No. 4 Linn-Mar, 83-73, last Tuesday. Two games prior to that, he poured in 22 points against top-ranked Iowa City West.
