Cougars keep No. 1 spot in baseball poll

The coaches who vote in the high school baseball poll still think Cedar Rapids Kennedy has the top Class 4A team in the state.

The Cougars (14-2) have topped the rankings all season and continued to sit in the No. 1 spot in the new IHSBCA poll released Monday.

Kennedy did nothing to dispel those thoughts in a doubleheader sweep of Dubuque Hempstead, 11-0 and 9-0, Monday.

J-Hawks up to 5th in softball poll

Jefferson moved up two spots to No. 5 in this week's Class 5A softball poll released Friday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The J-Hawks (14-1) are riding a 13-game winning streak, but face on of their toughest assignments of the season in a home game against Des Moines East (12-0) in the Jefferson Classic. The J-Hawks' only loss so far was to No. 3 Iowa City West (17-1) in the nightcap of their season-opening doubleheader last month.

Jefferson, West and No. 10 Dubuque Senior (18-0) are the only Mississippi Valley Conference teams in the polls.

Clear Creek Amana (15-0) is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and Solon (12-0) is No. 1 in Class 3A. Solon plays Des Moines East at 4:45 p.m. in the Jefferson Classic on Friday.

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team was voted No. 1 in the preseason poll that was released two weeks ago and the voters have seen nothing to change their minds.
