Unsung heroes lift Jeff by Wash

The Jefferson boys got good games from their go-to guys Friday night at Washington.

But it may have been the play of some unsung role players that made the difference in a come-from-behind 62-58 victory.

Stalwarts Royshawn Webb, Dennis McKinney and Adam Van Oort all scored in double figures for the J-Hawks. But it was senior reserve Treyton McCauley who gave them their first lead of the game on a looping 3-pointer with a minute to go in the third quarter.

Bohannon breaks Metro 3-point record

Could it be that the last of the Bohannon boys is the best of the bunch?

Linn-Mar senior Jordan Bohannon, the youngest of the four basketball brothers, scored the Lions’ game-ending nine straight points Tuesday night to preserve an 82-76 win over Xavier in a barn-burner of a battle in the Saints' gym.

He tallied 13 of his game-high 33 points (11 for 19 from the field) in the fourth quarter as the short-handed but gritty Saints made a mad-dash pull of a late comeback.

After Xavier sophomore Jackson Joens nailed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to bring his team within two points, Bohannon calmly shut the door by swishing four free throws in a row.

No. 8 Lions top Hawks for 8th in row

Jaime Printy Brandt and her husband Danny are expecting their first child in July, but she's having too much fun as the Linn-Mar girls basketball coach to step aside next season.

Brandt plans to return for her third year as head coach next season despite becoming a new mother.

"I do. Yup. No worries," she said Friday night with a smile. "I'm going to stick around. That's the plan.

"My husband will bring our baby to the games, I guess. It will be a gym rat, just like me."

Brandt and the eighth-ranked Lions defeated Cedar Rapids Prairie, 50-35, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game to finish the regular season with an eight-game winning streak Friday.

Cougars beat J-Hawks in final second

There have been some tough losses, some ill-advised shots and some long meetings after games, but the Kennedy Cougars vow they won't quit and they won't back down from anyone.

It showed Tuesday night.

Drake Brewster muscled in a basket with 0.9 seconds left Tuesday to give Kennedy a 60-59 victory over Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference tussle at the Jefferson gym.

The J-Hawks led by eight points entering the fourth period and led by four points with 37 seconds left in the game, but the Cougars kept battling and beat the J-Hawks for the ninth straight time.

Both clubs have only seven wins this year -- Kennedy is 7-11 and Jefferson is 7-12 -- and they were evenly matched Tuesday.

Mount Mercy baseball team set for action

It might be a little chilly in Georgia this weekend, but that's okay with the Mount Mercy University baseball team.

The Mustangs are ready to play ball.

Mount Mercy will participate in the Perfect Game College Spring Swing event at the new LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center in Emerson, Ga., with two games Friday and two more Saturday.

The weather forecast for Friday is for a high temperate of 55 degrees. Saturday's forecast calls for 36 degrees, but it's supposed to be dry and sunny.

"We're ready. We need to play," Mount Mercy coach Jack Dahm said before the Mustangs hopped on a bus Thursday for the 12-hour ride to Georgia. "There's only so much you can get done inside.

"We're at that point where we need to play someone else and get outside and see where we're at with things. We've got a long ways to go as a team and a program, but it will be nice to be outside."
