Berrios sets big goals with Twins for 2016

Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Jose Berrios made his debut with the Cedar Rapids Kernels in late April, 2013 and has evolved into what one national organization has rated as the 17th best prospect in all of professional baseball heading into the 2016 season.

On Wednesday night, Berrios joined his former manager with the Kernels, Jake Mauer, and the Twins’ minor league director, Brad Steil, for an appearance at the Kernels’ annual Hot Stove Banquet at the Doubletree Hotel.

The 21-year-old Berrios, from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was a supplemental first-round draft pick by the Twins in 2012 and his quick ascension up the organizational ladder has him on the threshold of becoming a Major Leaguer in 2016. Expectations of Berrios among Twins fans are extremely high.

No. 9 Eagles take care of Ellsworth

Bryan Petersen left Johnson Hall Wednesday night pleased, but far from satisfied.

Petersen's Kirkwood basketball team won its third straight game, downing ICCAC foe Ellsworth, 82-61, keeping the No. 9 Eagles (18-3, 4-1) hot on the trail of Southwestern in the conference standings.

The Eagles didn't play their best game in an 85-74 loss to Southwestern on Jan. 16 in Creston. Now they have rebounded with three solid wins.

"Even with the three wins we still have a long way to go," Petersen said. "Tonight, I don't think we played extremely well, but I think our guys have learned (from the Southwestern loss) and have bounced back at the same time. You have to do that in conference play.

"Obviously, we were frustrated by that loss down there at Southwestern," he continued. "We've still got a long way to go and the guys have done a good job of getting things back together."

Ya gotta believe! Saints whip Lions

If you did not believe in the Xavier Saints before they played at Linn-Mar on Tuesday night, it's time to start.

The Saints put on a sterling performance and whipped the Lions for the third straight year at Linn-Mar, this time 68-63 in the Metro Game of the Year so far.

Xavier is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Associated Press and Linn-Mar is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, but this game belonged to the gritty Saints who have taken dead aim on the first Mississippi Valley Conference title in school history.

No. 12 Lions hold off Xavier

Just a few short years ago, Tom Lilly battled against Jamie Printy when she was a star player for the Linn-Mar Lions.

Now Lilly is battling against Jamie (Printy) Brandt in her new role as the young girls basketball coach of the Lions, continuing their rivalry and friendship on a different level.

Brandt and the Lions won their latest confrontation with Lilly and the Xavier Saints, 47-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Friday night at Linn-Mar.

When it was over, Lilly congratulated Brandt on a job well done and they both left the floor with smiles.

Lilly has won more than 500 games and four state titles at Xavier, and now he's competing against a new generation of coaches like Brandt, who comes from a successful basketball family.
