Jabe Gonder wins Metro Spotlight Award

Jabe Gonder of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gonder, beginning his senior year at Washington, fired a 1-over-par 71 and captured second place at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Golf Meet at Jones Park on Thursday.

Gonder led the Warriors to the team championship by 12 shots over Iowa City West.

Gonder compiled an 18-hole average of 81.25 strokes last year as a junior, but he's worked hard on his game and entered 15 tournaments this summer to get ready for his final year in high school. He's worked particularly hard on his putting and needed only 29 putts on Thursday.

Hansen, Carter join Kirkwood softball

Joe Yegge thinks serving as the head softball coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie is helping his recruiting efforts at Kirkwood Community College.

Two prime examples this year are Maddie Hansen of Jefferson and Gabi Carter of Prairie, who have finished their all-state careers in high school and have joined Yegge's powerful club at Kirkwood.

Yegge has welcomed other good Metro players to Kirkwood before, but he thinks his three years at Prairie have boosted his efforts in getting more star players to join the Eagles.

Yegge has enjoyed three good seasons at Prairie, including a trip to the state tournament and just the second Mississippi Valley Conference title in school history after the program had languished for years.
