Saints ousted by North Scott again

DES MOINES - Lizzy Bailey and Sydney Wright helped the Xavier Saints win two state titles and make four trips to the state tournament during their careers for the most successful high school soccer program in state history.

That fact helped ease the pain somewhat after the Saints lost to North Scott, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state tournament Thursday afternoon at soggy Cownie Park in Des Moines.

Xavier won state titles in 2012 and 2013 when Bailey and Wright were freshmen and sophomores, completing an historic run of eight titles in a row, an unprecedented accomplishment in any girls sport in Iowa. The Saints reached the semifinals last year and made the quarterfinals this year, losing to North Scott both times.

Unlucky Lions fall with 32 seconds left

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar's trip to the state soccer tournaments ended on a stroke of bad luck Thursday night.

West Des Moines Valley's Sami Pick's sent a header into the right corner of the net with 32 seconds remaining to give her team a 2-1 victory in a Class 3A state quarterfinal match at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

The 80th-minute goal came off of a Tiger corner kick that was deflected off a Linn-Mar player's arm prior to Pick's header, and could have been called a hand ball.

"I was on the post and one of my players actually hit it with their arm," said defender Jenna Ajram, who scored the lone Linn-Mar goal in the first half.

Schmit taken to hospital with head injury

Cedar Rapids Kernels second baseman Blake Schmit was taken to Mercy Hospital Wednesday night after being hit in the head by a 95 mph fastball by Great Lakes pitcher Karch Kowalczyk.

Great Lakes won the game, 2-1.

Schmit lay face-down in the right-handed batter's box after the accident in the eighth inning as Kernels trainer Curtis Simondet and Manager Jake Mauer rushed to his side.

Schmit, a right-handed batter, was hit on the helmet near his left temple. The violent impact appeared to shove the helmet into Schmit's nose, causing bleeding from his left nostril.

Mauer said Schmit was dizzy, but never lost consciousness.
