Xavier sweeps Waterloo East in softball

WATERLOO - The Xavier softball team collected a pair of shutouts against Waterloo East Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Waterloo, 2-0 and 13-0.

Erin Drahozal and Kylie Oldridge were the winning pitchers for the Saints.

Drahozal and Steph Wehr were 2-for-3 for Xavier in the first game.

Morgan Breitbach went 3-for-3 and scored three runs in the second game. Charlotte Richards was 2-for-2 and scored twice.

Roeder sparks J-Hawks by Spartans

BETTENDORF - Tyler Roeder went 3-for-3 and scored three runs Tuesday as the sixth-ranked Jefferson J-Hawks defeated Pleasant Valley, 7-2.

Spencer VanScoyoc, Manny Olutunde and Colton Knox had two RBIs for Jefferson. VanScoyoc and Olutunde had two hits.

Jarred Woods pitched four strong innings for the J-Hawks for the victory. He did not allow any runs on three hits. Knox pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Washington softball splits with Rams

The Cedar Rapids Washington softball team split a high-scoring doubleheader with Dubuque Senior Tuesday at the Washington field.

The Warriors took the first game, 11-9. Dubuque Senior won the nightcap, 10-8.

The split left Washington at 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Dubuque Senior is 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the league.

Grace Stockmaster went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Washington in the 11-9 victory. Payton Bruner was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Cougars earn chance to defend title

Defending Class 3A state soccer champion Kennedy eked out a 1-0 win over Cedar Falls Monday in a regional final at Kingston Stadium, but it was far from easy.

Six minutes into the match, the fourth-ranked Cougar girls were hurting.

The surging Tigers had just missed scoring first when Kennedy goalie Olivia Weigel deflected a hard shot off her fingertips.

Seconds later, Kennedy star midfielder Morgan Petsche was crumpled on the ground with what she first feared was a broken right ankle but apparently is only a severe sprain. Still, it kept her on the bench the rest of the game.

Lions upend No. 3 Hempstead for state berth

DUBUQUE - The Linn-Mar girls soccer team got revenge against Dubuque Hempstead in the Class 3A regional finals Monday night and earned a trip to the state tournament with a 2-1 victory.

Linn-Mar will play an opening-round match at the 3A state tournament Thursday at Cownie Park in Des Moines.

Hempstead blanked Linn-Mar, 1-0, during the regular season at Linn-Mar, but the seventh-ranked Lions collected their biggest victory of the season Monday by trimming the third-ranked Mustangs in Dubuque.

Jensen Sevening gave Linn-Mar a 1-0 lead, but Alesha Duccini tied the score for Hempstead.

Allie Noggle scored the game-winning goal for the Lions with assists from Sevening and Olivia Garcia.

Linn-Mar will take a 15-4 record to the state tournament. Hempstead finished with a 15-4 mark.

Linn-Mar (15-4) will face West Des Moines Valley (12-7) in the first round of the state tournament Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
