Rima sizzles in 400 at Wilkinson Relays

Jalen Rima is convinced that racing from one sport to another at Cedar Rapids Prairie makes him even faster on a track.

There's no arguing with the results.

Rima ran the fastest time in the state in the 400-meter dash Friday when he was clocked in 48.78 seconds at the Wilkinson Relays at Kingston Stadium.

He also captured the 200-meter dash in 22.26 seconds, which is the fourth-best mark in the state this year.

Rima, just a junior, competes in football, basketball, track and baseball at Prairie. He thinks being a multi-sport athlete pays dividends.

"Definitely. A lot," he said after winning the 400. "Because you're always doing something. If you just sit down all the time, I wouldn't be where I'm at right now."

Rima plans to participate in sports in college, but is not sure which one.

Clinton hurls no-hitter at Kernels

It may have been inevitable, with the way the Cedar Rapids Kernels have been struggling to hit for the past two weeks, but they finally reached the lowest of offensive lows Friday night.

The Kernels fell victim to a combined no-hitter by three Clinton pitchers, losing 2-0 before 3,068 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The game lasted only 1 hour and 58 minutes.

Clinton starter Daniel Missaki tossed seven innings of hitless ball, not even allowing a base-runner until Kernels first baseman Trey Vavra worked a full-count walk with two outs in the seventh inning.

Kody Kerski and Troy Scott each added another hitless inning to complete the 23rd no-hitter in LumberKings history.

Parry eager for shot with NFL

David Parry beat the odds when he joined the Stanford football team five years ago as a walk-on and enjoyed a highly successful career, earning Pac-10 Conference honors and starting in two straight Rose Bowls.

Now the 2010 Linn-Mar High School grad is determined to beat the odds again by playing in the National Football League.

Parry, a 6-foot-1, 308-pound defensive tackle, hopes to be selected as the NFL draft continues this weekend, but he's not sure what's going to happen.

"I've heard as high as the third round. I've also heard that I could go undrafted, so it's a pretty wide spectrum at this point," he said Thursday night from his family's home in Marion.

He's willing to take the "walk-on" path again to the NFL as a free agent, if necessary.

Kernels fall to River Bandits, 4-2

DAVENPORT - The Cedar Rapids Kernels continued to have problems scoring runs Thursday and lost to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 4-2, in a Midwest League game before 2,808 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

The Kernels (12-9) collected only four hits in the game, although three of them were doubles.

Jacob Nottingham and Derek Fisher socked home runs for the River Bandits (15-6), who won two games in the three-game series.

Zack Granite reached base twice for the Kernels and extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games with a double down the left-field line to start the game.

Joshua James (1-0) earned his first win for Quad Cities. The right-hander retired 11 in a row at one point and allowed just one hit and struck out three in four shutout innings of relief.
