Kernels rattle Timber Rattlers, 7-3

APPLETON, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels enjoyed another good night in Wisconsin Tuesday with a 7-3 conquest of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before 1,093 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

Jorge Fernandez went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Kernels, whose bats have come alive in the first two games of the series. Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, giving him 20 RBIs this season.

Brett Doe was 2-for-3 and walked twice. All told, the Kernels drew nine walks Tuesday night after collecting 10 walks on Monday with greater discipline and patience at the plate. Tanner English walked three times in the leadoff spot for the Kernels.

Mat Batts (3-1, 2.05 ERA) allowed only one earned run in six innings for the victory. Batts also was touched for two unearned runs. He struck out four batters and walked one.

Prairie girls run away with title

The Cedar Rapids Prairie girls track team won seven events Tuesday and captured top honors at their own Prairie Invitational at John Wall Field.

Kenzie Soeken won the high jump (4-10), Kirstin Skriver took the 400 (1:01.73), Paige Possehl claimed the 800 (2:32.22) and Hannah Frazee won the 1500 (5:09.16) for the Hawks.

Prairie took the 4x800 relay with Jenna Kohoutek, Eilish Stanek, Alissa Neubauer and Megan Sprengeler sharing the baton (10:44.34). The Hawks won the 800 sprint medley with Katie VanDooren, Jenna Ross, Soeken and Skriver (1:58.56). They also notched the distance medley with Morgan Lewis, Soeken, Possehl and Frazee (4:28.44).

No.1 Lions slam Hempstead, 8-1

Tim Paulson rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles Tuesday as the top-ranked Linn-Mar tennis team defeated Dubuque Hempstead 8-1 in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Linn-Mar.

The Lions raised their records to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in the conference.

Trevor McCann, Ben Myers, Kyle Brendes, John Low and Ankur Parupally also cruised to straight-set victories in their singles matches for Linn-Mar.

The Lions are headed for a showdown at second-ranked Iowa City West on Thursday.

Thompson named Prairie wrestling coach

Alburnett's Kane Thompson has been hired as the head wrestling coach at Prairie, replacing Blake Williams who resigned after 12 seasons.

Thompson has been the head coach at Alburnett the past eight seasons.

"This is an exciting time for our wrestling program," said Prairie Athletic Director Rocky Bennett in a press release. "We had a very strong pool of candidates but it became clear that Kane was the right person to lead our program.

"I have watched him build a very successful program at Alburnett that competes for state championships year end and year out. He is a high-character guy that will continue to strengthen the culture here at Prairie."

During Thompson's tenure at Alburnett, the wrestling program has been among the state's best.

Cook wins long jump at Marion Relays

Skylar Cook of Marion High School captured the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 1/4 inch at the Marion Relays Monday at Thomas Park.

Western Dubuque won the team championship with 98.5 points. Marion finished fourth out of 13 teams.

Colton Forster of Marion finished second in the 3200 meter run in 9:46.38. The Indians also finished second in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:00.44.

Marion placed third in the 4x200 relay in 1:33.77.
