Grimm makes strong bid with Eagles

Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima has looked at seven different outfielders this season, trying to find the right combination of offense, defense and overall talent.

Based on what happened during Tuesday's doubleheader against Marshalltown, freshman Bryce Grimm of Xavier High School could be moving toward the front of the pack.

Jenks sets 2 records in Iowa City

IOWA CITY - Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks smashed two meet records at the Women of Troy Relays in Iowa City Tuesday.

Jenks blazed to victory in the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 14.38 seconds, breaking the old mark of 2:17.69 set by Erin Penticoff of Xavier in 2003. She captured the 1500 in 4 minutes, 35.77 seconds, snapping her own meet record of 4:42.94 set as a freshman in 2013.

Jenks ran the fastest times in the state this year in both events. She also ranks No. 1 in the state in the 3000.

Iowa City West nipped Linn-Mar for the team championship, 146 to 145. Prairie placed third, Kennedy fifth and Xavier seventh.

Zahner helps Coe split with BV

Paige Zahner belted a three-run homer to help the Coe softball team defeat Buena Vista, 7-4, in the first game of an Iowa Conference doubleheader at Clark Field Tuesday.

Buena Vista took the second game, 9-6.

Zahner went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the victory. Maliah Fligg had two hits and Ali Givens scored two runs. Arran Weeces (9-2) pitched a complete game for the victory.

Coe baseball splits with No.17 BV

Ben Jacobson and Tony Becker combined for a three-hit shutout Tuesday as Coe blanked 17th-ranked Buena Vista, 4-0, in the first game of an Iowa Conference doubleheader at Daniels Park.

Buena Vista won the second game, 8-6.

Jacobson (2-2) allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and two walks. Becker retired all four of the batters he faced in 1 1/3 innings to finish the shutout.

Cole Tomlinson went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs for the Kohawks in the victory. Craig Konrardy went 2-for-3.

'Meet The Kernels' set for April 7

The Cedar Rapids Kernels will host their annual "Meet the Kernels" night on Tuesday, April 7 starting at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The event is free to the public, with food and beverage available for purchase.

The Kernels' Bimm Ridder Diamond Shop will be open showcasing new merchandise for the 2015 season. The Kernels' Ticket Office also will be open so fans can purchase tickets to all 70 home games, including Opening Day on Sunday, April 12 against Beloit at 4:05 p.m.

The 2015 Kernels will mix and mingle with fans from 5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A short program will begin at 7 p.m. as Kernels Manager Jake Mauer will introduce the team and talk briefly about the upcoming season.
