Heisler wins Metro Spotlight Award

Bryton Heisler of Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Heisler, a 6-foot-2 senior, was a key member of the Kennedy basketball team that reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament and finished with an 18-6 record. He led the Cougars with 22 points in their 58-51 loss to Pleasant Valley at the state meet.

Coe's Sewera wins D3 wrestling title

HERSHEY, Pa. - Farai Sewera of Coe became the third national wrestling champion in school history Saturday night when he whipped Tyler Schneider of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 9-4, in the 165-pound finals at the NCAA meet in Hershey, Pa.

Coe finished seventh in the team standings with 40.5 points and had three All-Americans. Augsburg topped Wartburg for the national title, 100 to 89.5.

Tyler Burkle won an NCAA title for the Kohawks in 2008 and Clayton Rush was a two-time champion in 2010 and 2011.

McDermott, Saints finish year in style


DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints finished the most successful season in school history Saturday when they topped Williamsburg, 49-38, in the consolation game for third place at the Class 3A boys state basketball tournament.

Adam McDermott popped in four 3-pointers and led the Saints with 16 points, ending his prep career as one of the most prolific players in school annals.

Xavier compiled a 2-1 record at the 2015 state tournament for its first victories at the state meet in four trips to Des Moines. The Saints set a school record for most victories with an 18-8 record and McDermott finished his career as the second-leading scorer in school history with 1,058 points.

McDermott set new school marks for most points in one season (466), most 3-pointers in a career (159) and most 3-pointers in a single season (75). Kevin Andrews (2002-06) holds the career scoring mark at Xavier with 1,199 points.

RoughRiders knock off Madison, 4-1

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders collected a pair of power play goals Saturday night and tripped Madison, 4-1, for a crucial USHL victory before 2,865 fans at the Ice Arena.

The triumph kept Cedar Rapids one point behind Youngstown in the Eastern Conference standings with nine games left in the regular season for both teams. Youngstown has a 33-13-5 record for 71 points and Cedar Rapids has a 35-16-0 mark for 70 points in the two-team race for the conference title.

Erik Foley and Andrew Oglevie scored on power plays to give Cedar Rapids a 2-1 lead. Cal Burke had an unassisted goal in the second period for a 3-1 edge. Adam Gaudette finished the scoring into an empty net late in the game.

Ben Blacker made 21 saves for the RoughRiders.

Youngstown moved ahead of Cedar Rapids in the standings Friday night when the RoughRiders were idle. Dubuque and Muskegon are tied for third place in the Eastern Conference with 62 points, well behind the front-runners.

Drahozal tosses gem as Eagles split

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Nick Drahozal pitched a strong game Saturday as Kirkwood belted UCONN-Avery Point, 12-3, during its spring trip to Vero Beach, Fla.

Kirkwood lost its first game Saturday to Parkland, 9-0.

Drahozal, a freshman from Xavier High School, pitched a complete game and allowed only five hits in the seven-inning affair. He struck out eight batters and walked only one.

All three of Avery Point's runs were unearned. Drahozal threw 99 pitches, with 70 strikes.
