Kirkwood men ousted by DMACC

BOONE - There's an old saying in sports that it's difficult for any team to beat another team three times in a season, but that's exactly what host DMACC was able to do Saturday afternoon.

The second-ranked DMACC Bears sent No. 8 Kirkwood home just one game short of a spot at nationals with an 86-69 victory in the championship game of the NJCAA Region XI tournament in Boone.

The Bears will take a 26-5 record to the national tournament. Kirkwood retires with a 25-7 mark.

Although they led for stretches of the first half, in large part by forcing turnovers and scoring in transition, the Eagles could not keep the pressure on down the stretch as DMACC gradually pulled away.

"They've got good players who made plays," said Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen. "They're a good team, won our conference and are ranked number two in the country.

"When they go on that run and have players like that, you can do great things. We didn't do a good job of limiting those runs by taking some quick shots that fueled the transition buckets. But I'll give those players the credit for getting those things done."

Gavin grateful for his life with Mustangs

Paul Gavin was a young assistant basketball coach at Mount Mercy in 1992 when the head coach left and the Mustangs needed a new man to run the show.

After a few weeks of not knowing what would happen next, he requested a meeting with Dr. Tom Feld, the college president, to see if he might be allowed to apply for the job.

"I sat down and said, 'I'm young, I'm green, but I love this place, I'd love an opportunity to at least get an interview,'" Gavin said Wednesday night, "and he assured me I'd get an interview.

"The next day I got to work and I still remember this: I had a message from the president and I thought, 'Oh, boy,'" Gavin related, a tinge of trepidation in his voice. "He invited me down and he actually gave me the job."

Gavin, now 48, was 25 years old at the time.

Cougars trip Lions for trip to state

The Kennedy Cougars are at their best when they are "playing downhill."

Coach Jon McKowen's team prides itself in being aggressive on both ends of the floor and it was evident in Tuesday's night's Class 4A substate final against Linn-Mar at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The Cougars had the Lions on their heels from the start. The offensive strategy was to get to the basket and it resulted in 42 free throw attempts. On defense the plan was to harass the Lion duo of Jordan Bohannon and Nic Uhlir all over the floor.

The result was a hard-fought 58-54 win and a second straight trip to the state tournament. Kennedy (18-5) drew the No. 6 seed and will play No. 3 seed Pleasant Valley on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:35 p.m. in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena.
