Kennedy boys clip Wahawks, 69-63

The ninth-ranked Kennedy boys basketball team came alive in the fourth quarter and beat Waterloo West, 69-63, Tuesday at Kennedy.

The Cougars trailed 46-45 after three quarters, but they scored 24 points in the final frame.

Cole Murdock and Brendon Manning each scored 20 points for Kennedy (15-5) and Zach Daniels added 16 points. The Cougars made ten 3-point baskets, with Murdock hitting five triples and Daniels sinking four 3-pointers.

Burger, McDermott lead Xavier over CF

CEDAR FALLS – Mitchell Burger scored 22 points and Adam McDermott added 19 points and five assists as the Xavier boys basketball team topped Cedar Falls, 62-57, Tuesday night in Cedar Falls.

Tra’Von Fagan scored 14 points and A.J. Green added 13 for the Tigers (13-7).

The Saints improved to 12-8. Calvin Winker had 10 points for Xavier. Burger and McDermott both made three 3-pointers.

Printy’s 24 points lead Wash boys

DUBUQUE – Jared Printy made four 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead the Washington boys basketball team in an up-tempo 82-79 win over Dubuque Wahlert on Tuesday.

Hunter Strait scored 14 points and dished out six assists for the Warriors (11-9). Keegan Moore scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds.

Maurice Arrington contributed 13 points with nine rebounds. Drew Hoeger scored 10 points with four assists.

Mark Bliss named Prairie football coach

Prairie High School Athletic Director Rocky Bennett has announced the hiring of Mark Bliss as head football coach pending board approval.

Bliss comes to Cedar Rapids Prairie from Ozark High School in Ozark, Mo., with 26 years of experience in education and athletics. Bliss succeeds Mike Morrissey, who resigned after four seasons to accept a coaching job in Arizona.

"On behalf of myself and my family I want to thank the College Community School District for giving us this incredible opportunity to be a part of their family," said Bliss. "After thorough research and input from close family friends who live in the Cedar Rapids area, I have no doubt we are moving to a community that prides itself on providing essential resources for all of its students to attain a quality education.

Burger wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier junior Mitchell Burger is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Burger has been a key player for the Xavier basketball team all season, but he's played some of his best basketball for the Saints the past three weeks.

He scored 21 points and grabbed four rebounds when Xavier upset Class 4A No. 4 Linn-Mar, 83-73, last Tuesday. Two games prior to that, he poured in 22 points against top-ranked Iowa City West.
