Fitzgerald stars at Liberal Arts swim

Sam Fitzgerald of Coe set school, pool and meet records Friday by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.80 at the Liberal Arts Championships at the Eby Fieldhouse pool.

Fitzgerald is a freshman from Linn-Mar.

Jasmine Deng of Coe placed second in 3-meter diving with 411.10 points. Kendall Bundy, Fitzgerald, Kenni Sterns and Lindsay Meade placed third in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.62.

The Coe women are tied for third place with 277.5 points heading into the final day of the meet on Saturday. The Coe men are ninth and last in their standings.

RoughRiders belted by Bloomington, 6-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Bloomington poured in six goals Friday night and pelted the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 6-3, in a USHL game before 2,522 fans at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill.

The RoughRiders were out-shot by a healthy margin, 38-16.

Derek Daschke, Cal Burke and Joe Wegwerth scored goals for Cedar Rapids. Shane Bednard scored twice for Bloomington.

Ben Blacker had a long night in goal for the RoughRiders, stopping 32 of 38 shots.

Cedar Rapids still leads the Eastern Conference by a comfortable margin with a 29-13-0 record for 58 points. Bloomington has a 19-16-7 mark in the Eastern Conference for 45 points.

KCRG & DirecTV need to solve problem

I miss Scott Saville.

Trust me, I never thought I'd string those four words together in a single sentence.

I offer those words - I miss Scott Saville - with whimsy, truth and sarcasm mixed together. I miss his sports reports on KCRG, because he's a likeable guy and enthusiastic about his work, but KGAN, KWWL and FOX-28 are just a click away.

You guessed it. We have DirecTV at our house, and this dispute between KCRG and DirecTV has lasted long enough. If I've counted correctly, KCRG has been unavailable on DirecTV for the past four weeks while the two companies try to resolve their problems.

I don't have a dog in this hunt. The Gazette Company, which owns KCRG, fired me six years ago. And DirecTV seems to go on the fritz every time there's an electrical storm, ice storm or stray cloud in the sky.

J-Hawks pin Bobcats, make state duals

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Dalton Kuehl plans to enroll at Coe this summer to begin his college education and play football, but he's toying with the idea of wrestling for the Kohawks as well.

Based on what he's accomplished with the Jefferson wrestling team this season, it might be hard to walk away from the sport.

Linn-Mar wrestlers dumped by Bulldogs

BETTENDORF - The second-ranked Bettendorf Bulldogs rolled by Linn-Mar, 60-12, in the Class 3A regional dual meet finals Wednesday night in Bettendorf.

Linn-Mar topped Pleasant Valley, 47-23, in the semifinals to give Coach Doug Streicher his 300th dual meet victory, according to the Linn-Mar wrestling twitter page.

AJ Geers collected two victories for Linn-Mar with a 9-0 decision against Pleasant Valley and a pin against Bettendorf. Toby Northrup also had two wins for the Lions with a pin against Pleasant Valley and an injury default against Bettendorf.

The 17th-ranked Lions finished the dual meet season with a 20-11 record.
