Bohannon takes lead in Metro scoring

Linn-Mar junior Jordan Bohannon has moved to the top of the Metro scoring derby after a hot week of 3-point shooting.

Bohannon drilled five 3-pointers in a victory over Kennedy and hit a half-dozen triples in a victory over Cedar Falls last week. Those performances moved the sharpshooter to the top of Metro scoring with a 17.3 average and also lifted him into the Metro lead with 28 3-pointers in eight games.

Craig Engle of Marion is second in Metro scoring at 17.1 points and Nic Uhlir of Linn-Mar is third at 16.0.

Keegan Moore of Washington leads Metro boys in rebounding with 9.5 per game. Brendon Manning of Kennedy and Adam McDermott of Xavier are tied for second with 7.1 caroms per game.

Wempen storms back for Linn-Mar matmen

Linn-Mar senior Matt Wempen knows the clock is ticking on his high school wrestling career.

He won a state title as a freshman in 2012, but he suffered a tough 3-2 loss in the finals in 2013 and had to settle for fifth place last year when he wrestled at the state meet with a broken thumb.

He broke his left thumb again in practice this season and had to sit - impatiently - and watch the first six weeks of the season before returning with a flourish at the 49th Annual Linn-Mar Invitational Saturday.

Wempen collected four quick pins at 145 pounds in 3:15, 1:25, 1:12 and 28 seconds. He also received a forfeit, giving him a 5-0 record after just 6 minutes, 20 seconds of wrestling.

Ollinger helps Lions escape Indians

For a while Saturday night, it looked like the age-old (but sometimes interrupted) rivalry between the Linn-Mar and Marion girls was going to be more of the same.

The traditionally dominant Lions charged out to a 19-8 lead on the big stage at the U.S. Cellular Center while the freshman-laden Indians appeared to have a case of the jitters.

Marion senior workhorse Amanda Sahm took charge, however, and even coaxed her young teammates into the lead before finally falling 52-48.

As was bound to happen sooner or later, new Linn-Mar star Amanda Ollinger (with help from her former AAU pal Niki Sharma) celebrated a second half coming-out party that proved too tough for the undersized Marion girls to handle.
