Morrissey leaving Prairie for Arizona

Mike Morrissey informed his players Monday after school in a team meeting that he was resigning after four years as Prairie's head football coach.

Morrissey is leaving at the end of the 2014-2015 school year for a teaching and head football coach position in Arizona, pending their board's approval.

Under Morrissey in four seasons, his Prairie teams reached the playoffs three times and in 2012 reached the quarterfinals. During his tenure at Prairie, 20 players received All-Conference and All-Metro recognition including eight All-State selections.

"On behalf of my family, I want to thank the Prairie community for the opportunity and support they have given us over the last four years," Morrissey said in a news release. "We can't say enough great things about the school, program and people here at Prairie.

"It was a very difficult decision for us to leave but ultimately it came down to what was best for our family with the opportunity to be closer to my wife's family in Arizona. Whoever steps into this position will be blessed with unlimited support and a program with young men intrinsically motivated to be the best they can be."

Urbi, Kitsos power Kennedy swimmers

Brennan Urbi and Stefan Kitsos of Cedar Rapids Kennedy have their names written all over the state leader board in boys swimming this year.

Urbi ranks 10th to 22nd in three events, Kitsos ranks 12th to 25th in three other events and they are members of three relay teams that rank 13th to 21st.

That's not bad for now, but they both think they can climb even higher as the season moves toward the state meet in February.

"I definitely think we have the potential to move up," Urbi said Monday night. "I think it's just going to come down to what we want to put in at practice and how much we really want to buckle down and make ourselves get better, no matter how much it's going to hurt during those weeks of training."

Urbi and Kitsos, both juniors, had a hand in four victories Monday as the 16th-ranked Cougars topped No. 27 Jefferson, 104-66, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Jefferson.

Don't blame Linn-Mar for transfers

First the Jenks sisters transferred into the Linn-Mar school district, although they were young at the time and not in high school. Then the Sommer twins transferred to Linn-Mar when their mother got a new job. Then Kelsey Drake switched from Jefferson to Linn-Mar for swimming. Now Amanda Ollinger has followed suit and is leaving Jefferson behind for the Lions.

These are six high-profile transfers involving some of the very best female athletes in the state. The Jenks sisters flew under the radar when they open-enrolled in the Linn-Mar district, because Stephanie was in the sixth grade at the time and Jennifer was in the fifth grade, but all the others happened after they began their high school careers.

People like to rush to judgment about these things and suspect there was foul play, but there is no shred of evidence to suggest that anyone who works for the Linn-Mar school district did anything wrong. There was no recruiting, no tampering, nothing improper by Linn-Mar.

Did parents talk to other parents before these things happened? Perhaps, but there's nothing illegal about that. If you were thinking about changing schools, wouldn't you have questions that needed to be answered?

Manning wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Brendon Manning is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Manning, a 6-foot-4 forward, is one of the most improved basketball players in the Metro area this season. He averaged just 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 11 games last year and missed the second half of the campaign with a broken ankle, but he has become one of the leaders for the Cougars this year.

Manning enjoyed three big games for Kennedy this past week as the Cougars raised their record to 5-1 with three straight victories.

Chloe Rice wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion freshman Chloe Rice is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Rice, a 5-foot-10 guard, is one of the top young basketball players in the state. She poured in 28 points in a 58-56 loss to Clear Creek-Amana Tuesday and is averaging 12.5 points for the season.

Rice is already being followed by NCAA Division I colleges who might like to recruit her, including several of the top schools in Iowa.
