Stewart shines on mound for Kernels

CLINTON - The Cedar Rapids Kernels held the Clinton LumberKings to two hits Friday night in a 6-1 victory before 5,136 fans at Ashford University Field.

The Kernels (10-10) snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kohl Stewart (1-1) picked up his first victory in the Midwest League. The right-hander went six innings and allowed only one hit and one unearned run. He struck out a season-high six batters.

Lembeck will wrestle for Hawkeyes

Linn-Mar senior Ross Lembeck has decided to continue his wrestling career at the University of Iowa, his father Chris Lembeck said Thursday.

Lembeck was a four-time place-winner at the Class 3A state tournament. He finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th for the Lions, including a third-place showing at 152 pounds this year.

Lembeck was ranked No.1 this year, but he missed a month of the season with a knee injury and hurt his shoulder at the state tournament. He also suffered from a knee injury last year as a junior.

 

Skidding Kernels fall under .500

PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Chiefs did not collect their first hit until the seventh inning Wednesday, but they found a way to blank the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-0, before 4,758 fans at Dozer Park.

The Chiefs (11-7) scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the victory, despite getting only three hits in the game.

The Kernels saw their record dip under the .500 mark at 9-10. The Kernels began the season with an 8-3 record, but have lost seven of their last eight games.

Furnish shines at MVC golf meet

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Cedar Rapids Jefferson graduate Megan Furnish placed sixth for Missouri State University at the Missouri Valley Conference women's golf tournament Tuesday at the Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill.

Furnish fired rounds of 76, 73 and 73 to finish at 6-over 222 for the 54-hole tournament. She had the lowest score for her team.

Danielle Lemek of Bradley won the event at 4-under 212.

Furnish, a sophomore at Missouri State, was named the school's Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance. She set new career-bests for a single round (73), 54-hole tournament (222) and overall finish (sixth).

 

Coe softball team splits with Central

PELLA - The Coe softball team split an Iowa Conference doubleheader with Central College in Pella Tuesday to retain a one-game league in the league standings.

Coe won the first game, 5-3.

Central took the nightcap, 2-1, on a walk-off home run by Katie Canney in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The split left the ninth-ranked Kohawks with a 9-3 record in the Iowa Conference. Central, Luther, Dubuque and Simpson are all tied for second place at 8-4.
