Kamin takes CRANDIC golf with 77

MJ Kamin is naturally excited about joining the women's golf team at Iowa State next year, but she's not ready to be tugged toward Ames just yet.

Kamin wants to enjoy her final season at Cedar Rapids Washington and take a shot at winning the Class 5A state title in June.

She's off to a good start.

Kamin fired a 5-over-par 77 on a gray, blustery day at Twin Pines Wednesday to win the CRANDIC championship by two strokes over Maddie Bertsch of Xavier.

Rams snap 16-game slide against Coe

Seth Wing grew up in Maquoketa, so he jumped at the opportunity to come "home" and become the new baseball coach at Cornell College three years ago even though the Rams had nearly hit rock-bottom as a program.

Wing obviously knew what he was doing.

Cornell took another big step in the right direction Tuesday with a 10-8 victory over Coe at Veterans Memorial Stadium, snapping a 16-game losing streak against the Kohawks.

"It's a big win for our program," said Wing. "It kind of shows that we are turning the corner and can finally compete with them. It's been a long time."

The Rams had not beaten the Kohawks since 2008.

Cougars, Warriors trade 1-0 victories

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Washington soccer teams swapped 1-0 verdicts in a Metro doubleheader at Kingston Stadium Tuesday.

The ninth-ranked Kennedy girls blanked the Warriors in the first game, 1-0, on a goal by Kasey Dekko.

The 11th-ranked Washington boys topped fourth-ranked Kennedy, 1-0, in the second game on a goal by Jacob Bjornsen.

   

Christensen gets 3 hits as Kernels fall

PEORIA, Ill. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Peoria Chiefs, 4-1, before 736 fans at Dozer Park Tuesday night in Peoria.

Chad Christensen led the Kernels with three of the team's six hits. Zack Larson drove in Christensen for the team's lone run in the ninth inning.

The Kernels fell to 9-9 for the season with their sixth loss in their last seven games.

Peoria took a 1-0 lead in the first inning for the second consecutive game in the series. Juan Herrera doubled with one away and came home on a two-out infield single by Kenny Peoples-Walls.

Peoples-Walls came up with another two-out RBI single in the third inning to extend the Chiefs' lead to 2-0.

Prairie girls win Mount Pleasant Relays

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Cedar Rapids Prairie girls track team won four events and captured the team championship at the Panther Relays in Mount Pleasant Tuesday.

Hannah Grimm won the 400 (1:01.66), Kenzie Soeken took the high jump (4-10) and Rachel Grifin won the discus (111-9) for the Hawks. Prairie also won the sprint medley (1:54.76).

The Hawks got second-place showings from Jocelyn Wood (800), Soeken (200),Halle Lueck (long jump), Natalie Rumer (shot and discus), the distance medley and 4x400 relay.

The Jefferson J-Hawks won the 4x400 relay (4:18.78) and placed second in the 4x800 relay. Jefferson rested most of its top people for the Drake Relays and finished seventh out of eight teams in the standings.
