Sweeting left Bahamas to help Eagles

Kirkwood pitcher David Sweeting could have been back home in the Bahamas on Friday afternoon, enjoying another warm day and the beautiful blue-green waters.

"Mid-80s," he mused about the temperature where he lives in Nassau. "Clear skies, clear water. You can go out a couple of hundred feet of water and still see the bottom."

Instead, Sweeting was toiling on the mound for the Eagles on Friday with the temperature straining to reach 40 under gray skies.

He didn't seem to mind a bit.

Sweeting tossed six shutout innings as No.19 Kirkwood defeated Rochester Tech, 5-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at the Kirkwood Community College diamond in Cedar Rapids.

Christensen could stick with Kernels

FORT MYERS, Fla. —  With the Cedar Rapids Kernels set to open their 2014 season in just a week, the Minnesota Twins Class A affiliate is headed into the final days of spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., with only a few more decisions to make.

Manager Jake Mauer indicated after Wednesday’s game with the Red Sox’s Class A group that the Kernels’ roster is shaping up with just a handful of positions still unresolved.

One player still “on the bubble” with the Kernels is Chad Christensen, who prepped at Cedar Rapids Washington High School before playing ball for the University of Nebraska. Christensen was drafted by the Twins last June and played last summer for the Twins’ Gulf Coast League rookie level affiliate in Fort Myers.

Petersen sheds 'interim' tag at Kirkwood

Bryan Petersen can cut the "interim" tag off his warmup suit at Kirkwood Community College now.

The job is all his.

Kirkwood has named Petersen, 26, the official men's basketball coach after he served as the interim coach this past season.

Doug Wagemester stepped aside as the coach after the 2012-13 campaign following 15 years at the helm to devote more time to his duties as the school's athletic director, but he mulled the possibility of returning as head coach after a year's absence.

On second thought, he's decided things have worked out just fine. Petersen compiled a 21-10 record as the interim coach and Wagemester liked what he saw.

Petersen played for Wagemester at Kirkwood and served as an assistant coach for one season before moving into the interim position.

Olson named MVP of All-Star Game

Jacob Olson would love to follow his brother's footsteps and play basketball at Kirkwood Community College next season.

He'd also love to strike out on his own and play at Mount Mercy University.

Either way, the all-state point guard from Cedar Rapids Jefferson figures it's a win-win situation.
