Undefeated Eagles rally for 9-6 victory

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. —  Shawn Simmons sparkled in relief Tuesday as the Kirkwood Community College Eagles rallied from a 6-0 deficit and defeated Westchester Community College, 9-6.

The Eagles raised their record to 8-0 on their spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla.

Westchester jumped to a 6-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Simmons came in to pitch and shut the door the rest of the way. He allowed only one hit and no runs in 4.1 innings with five strikeouts.

Kirkwood pulled within 6-3 in the bottom of the third and made it 6-5 in the fifth inning. The Eagles scored four runs in the sixth inning for the victory.

Randy Perez went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Shane Kemp was 3-for-4 and scored twice. Milton Croes went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a triple. Tyler Butz also had a triple.

 

Kirkwood softball wins 3 games

CROWDER, Mo. - The Kirkwood softball team won all three of its games at the Crowder Classic in Crowder, Mo., Monday.

The fifth-ranked Eagles topped Seminole State, 4-0, on a four-hit shutout by Sam Belz. Chasney Jenkins and Erin Weno went 2-for-4.

Kirkwood swept two games from Central Methodist, 8-0 and 11-2, raising its record to 15-4 for the season.

Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar sophomore Stephanie Jenks is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks, a premier distance runner and triathlete, becomes the first two-time winner of the award since the Metro Spotlight series began in August.

Jenks enjoyed a remarkable string of success during a seven-day period this month.

Pritts wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Mitch Pritts is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Pritts has established himself as one of the top distance runners in Iowa. He helped Prairie capture the Class 4A state cross country title last fall in Fort Dodge and placed in three events at the Class 4A state track meet last May.

Pritts began the 2014 season by winning the 3200 in 9:44.59 at the Dickinson Relays in Cedar Falls on Tuesday.

Koolbeck pushed the right buttons for MSR

Mike Koolbeck, a superb sports journalist, was the unsung hero of the Metro Sports Report from the very beginning of our venture. He might humbly disagree, but it's the absolute truth.

Mike was the guy who put the jigsaw together on a daily basis, pushing all the right buttons, popping stories and pictures into place until they fit together just right.

While the rest of us went out and covered games, Mike stayed home with his laptop and toiled into the early hours of the morning to give our readers what they wanted. He occasionally covered some football and baseball games, but his main job was to serve as our primary website administrator.
