Jenks sets soph record at 5K race in NYC

NEW YORK - Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar placed second in the 5,000 meter run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York Friday and set a national record in the event for high school sophomores.

Jenks ran the 5K race in 16 minutes, 37.5 seconds. Tessa Barrett, a high school senior from Waverly, Pa., won the event in 16 minutes, 11.855 seconds.

The top-six finishers in the race were named All-Americans.

Jenks won a major triathlon in Florida last Saturday, captured the 1500 and 3000 meter runs at the Dickinson Relays in Cedar Falls on Tuesday, then flew to New York for the New Balance meet.

Stecklein named Prairie volleyball coach

After serving 12 years as an assistant volleyball coach at Prairie High School, Lynnette Stecklein has been named the head coach of the program pending board approval. Stecklein, a native of Fredericksburg, Iowa, succeeds Kevin Geary who resigned at the conclusion of the season.

Stecklein has been with the College Community School District since 2001 and teaches physical education at Prairie High School. For 20-plus years Stecklein has been involved with coaching volleyball at all levels.

In addition to her years at Prairie, she was the head volleyball coach at Charles City from 1989-1992 and has been very active with Prairie club volleyball programs. She is also an assistant varsity softball coach at Prairie, a position she has held since 2005.

Rima eager for Year 2 with Kirkwood

The Eagles finished 30-14 overall and 13-11 in ICCAC conference games in 2013 after going 21-33 and 9-15 the year before under Tim Evans. Rima likes what he's seen so far.

Cougars topped by Sioux City North

DES MOINES - The same hot shooting that contributed to Cedar Rapids Kennedy's four-game winning streak and Class 4A state basketball tournament berth nearly led to an upset victory over Sioux City North in a first-round contest Wednesday night.

But those shots stopped falling during a brief fourth-period stretch, allowing the Stars to pull away from the Cougars, 75-65, at Wells Fargo Arena.

It was a heartbreaking conclusion to head coach Jon McKowen's first season at the helm of the Kennedy program. His team never backed down, even after facing an early 10-0 deficit where nothing seemed to go right.
