Kirkwood women nudged in regional, 94-92

FORT DODGE - The Kirkwood Eagles missed three shots in the final seconds Friday night and lost to Iowa Central, 94-92, in the semifinals of the women's regional basketball tournament in Fort Dodge.

The 11th-ranked Eagles (25-7) led by 10 points in the second half, but No.9 Iowa Central (26-5) rallied and tied at 85-85.

The game was tied, 92-92, in the final minute before the Tritons scored their winning points.

Ariel Sneed led Kirkwood with 24 points and eight rebounds. Dani Woolfolk contributed 20 points and six assists. Cassidy Clark had 15 points and eight rebounds. Mikayla Fallon finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Team USA tops RoughRiders in OT

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Team USA defeated the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-4, in overtime Friday night in a USHL game before 281 fans at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Andrew Poturalski tied the game for Cedar Rapids, 4-4, with an unassisted goal midway through the third period. It was his second goal of the night.

Sonny Milano won the game for Team USA at the 1:46 mark in overtime.

Kayla Armstrong wins IGHSAU award

Xavier High School graduate Kayla Armstrong has been elected as the recipient of the "Jack North Basketball Award," one of the highest high school athletic honors in Iowa.

The award is given by the IGHSAU to an outstanding basketball player from the previous year who has graduated. Armstrong was a member of Xavier's 2013 state championship girls basketball team and was named captain of the 2013 state tournament team. She currently attends Drake University, where she plays soccer.

"I am both humbled and grateful to have been selected as the recipient of the Jack North Award," said Armstrong. "I may be the one accepting this honor, but this award truly belongs to the great teammates and coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with and teams I have been fortunate enough to be a part of during the various stages of my career.

Kernels open ticket office on Monday

Opening Day for the 2014 season is less than four weeks away and a sure sign is the opening of the Kernels Ticket Office and Bimm Ridder Diamond Shop on Monday at 10 a.m.

Individual game tickets for the Cedar Rapids Kernels go on sale Monday morning in the Ticket Office and online at www.kernels.com.

It pays to purchase tickets in advance as the Kernels have implemented a "Game Day" ticket price. Ticket prices for advance sales are $11 for Premier tickets, $9 for Club tickets, $8 for Plaza tickets and $7 for Lawn seating, but those prices go up $1 the day of the game.

Tristan Beyer eyes state title in 400

IOWA CITY - Tristan Beyer is excited about playing football at Upper Iowa University this fall, but there's something he wants to accomplish with the Cedar Rapids Prairie track team before heading to Fayette.

Beyer finished second by a scant margin in the 400 meter dash at the Class 4A state meet last May and it's bugged him ever since.

Deshond Robinson of Clinton won the state title in 48.71 seconds, with Beyer a tick behind in a personal-best 48.85 seconds.

Robinson and Beyer are both seniors now. If they meet again, Beyer plans to finish on top.
