Jeffery tops All-Metro wrestling team

Linn-Mar state champion Alijah Jeffery has been named the Athlete of the Year on the 2014 All-Metro wrestling team, selected by the Metro wrestling coaches.

Jeffery won the 120-pound title at the state meet last week. He was the only state champion from the Metro area this year.

Blake Williams of Prairie was named the Coach of the Year on the All-Metro team.

RoughRiders knock off Sioux City, 5-2

SIOUX CITY - The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders had only 15 shots on goal Friday night, but they made them count.

Dylan Steman scored twice as the RoughRiders defeated Sioux City, 5-2, before 2,567 fans in a USHL game at the Tyson Events Center.

Sioux City out-shot the RoughRiders by a healthy margin, 32-15, but all-star goalie Danny Tirone stopped 30 of those shots for Cedar Rapids.

Schoffner to receive IGHSAU award

Chuck Schoffner of Ankeny is the winner of the Jack North Award from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the IHSGAU announced Friday.

The Jack North Award is the highest honor the Union presents to an individual. The award has been given just 14 times in the 87-year history of the IGHSAU.

Schoffner will be honored at the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament during halftime of the Class 5A championship game Saturday, March 8.

Saints top Indians; No.1 Wahlert next

The Xavier boys had all they could handle Thursday night with a scrappy Marion squad to make it to next week's substate final.

What the underdog

Indians (10-13) lacked in size they made up for in heart and hustle.

The Saints (15-8) prevailed, 62-49, in the Linn-Mar gym and get to face Class 3A top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert (17-3) next Monday at Epworth for a state tournament berth.

“It was a great game,” said a relieved Xavier Coach Ryan Luehrsmann after the district final victory. “We knew we'd be in for a battle. They're a well-coached bunch of kids who understand the fundamentals of the game. They play under control and make it tough on you.”

It was a fun game to watch, too.

It featured large and loud student sections on opposite sides of the floor, enthusiastic but polite under the eyes and ears of nearby school administrators.

Reed saves Kohawks against BV

With their season dangling by a thread Thursday night, Coe women's basketball coach Randi Peterson wanted Mackenzie Reed to take the final shot of the game.

The 5-foot-10 senior from Iowa City West delivered.

Reed drove to the basket and banked in a shot with 5.2 seconds left to give the Kohawks a dramatic 65-64 victory over Buena Vista in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament at Eby Fieldhouse.

Coe (16-10) will face Loras (18-8) in the tournament finals Saturday afternoon at Loras.
