Moses stepping down at Prairie

After four seasons, James Moses is stepping down as the head boys basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie effective at the conclusion of the season.

The announcement was made Wednesday night.

"Coach Moses is very passionate about the game of basketball," said Activities Director Rocky Bennett. "He was committed to helping our boys improve at all levels as players and, more importantly, as young men. He is such a quality person and we are appreciative of his dedicated service to Prairie."

Coe women lose game, but help good cause

The Coe women’s basketball team just couldn’t seem to hold onto a lead during its Iowa Conference game against Wartburg Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Wartburg triumphed 73-66, though the Kohawks (14-10, 9-4) led 33-32 against the Knights (10-14, 4-9) at halftime.

The teams were within three points of each other for the first six minutes of the second half, but after a three-point play by Bobbie Burrows the Knights started to pull away.

But this game was about more than the score.

Woolfolk, Clark pace No.14 Kirkwood

Danielle Woolfolk scored 21 points and Cassidy Clark collected a double-double Wednesday night as Kirkwood defeated Iowa Western, 77-67, in a junior college women's basketball game at Johnson Hall.

Clark finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kirsten Larson tossed in 11 points for the Eagles.

Kirkwood, ranked No.14 in NJCAA Division II, raised its record to 21-6. Iowa Western, ranked No.25 in NJCAA Division I, fell to 22-6.

Fuller, Tagarelli lead Eagles by Clinton

JC Fuller scored 17 points Wednesday night and Joseph Tagarelli added 15 as the Kirkwood Eagles topped Clinton Community College, 69-55, in a junior college basketball game at Johnson Hall.

Myzeah Batie-Gaddy finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for Kirkwood (17-9, 8-4). Tagarelli snared nine rebounds.

Ajay Lawton had seven assists for the Eagles and Fuller had five. Taylor Olson missed the game with a sore ankle.

Samuel Bil scored 15 points for Clinton (1-22, 0-11).

J-Hawk bowlers turn back the clock

Happy days are here again for the Jefferson J-Hawk bowlers.

Both the girls and boys teams won the all-metro regional qualifying meet Tuesday at Lancer Lanes and advanced to the Class 2A state tournament next Tuesday in Des Moines.

The Linn-Mar boys also qualified as an at-large team. In the early days of high school bowling, Jefferson dominated the local scene. But the J-Hawks have been challenged in recent years by up-and-coming programs like Prairie and Linn-Mar.

“It is not unusual for us to qualify both teams for state,” said venerable J-Hawk Coach Virg Cerveny. “But it's been a few years.”
