RoughRiders pick Gareau, Petrash as captains

It was Election Day in the United States on Tuesday, when citizens all over the country elected new representatives or re-elected old ones.

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders held their own election this week as well and picked Dylan Gareau as their captain and Corey Petrash as their assistant captain.

All of the RoughRiders got a vote. Coach Mark Carlson had veto power, if needed, but heartily endorsed the results, calling Gareau and Petrash good leaders and good choices.

Gareau, 19, is a forward from Richmond, Ontario. Petrash, 18, is a forward from East St. Paul, Manitoba, so both captains hail from Canada.

Imagine doing that all season with a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder.

Fuller leads No.16 Eagles by John Wood

Two members of the Sioux City East basketball team that placed second at the Class 4A state tournament in 2012 moved to Eastern Iowa to play college basketball last year.

Adam Woodbury, a 7-foot-1 center, enrolled at the University of Iowa and has become an important part of the basketball resurgence in Iowa City.

J.C. Fuller, a 6-foot-4 guard, enrolled at Kirkwood Community College last year and has become an important player for the Eagles.

Fuller poured in 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds Wednesday night as the 16th-ranked Eagles spanked John Wood Community College, 77-57, in the home opener at Johnson Hall.
