Wounded J-Hawks fall to City High

IOWA CITY - The weight of history - and a week's worth of injuries - proved too much for Cedar Rapids Jefferson and the J-Hawks lost to No.10 Iowa City High, 35-10, Friday at Bates Field.

City High improved to 3-1 and became just the second program in Iowa to play 1,000 football games (Harlan is the other).

On the other side of history, Jefferson fell to 0-4 for the season. And the loss was the 34th over the last 35 games for the J-Hawks.

But Jefferson Coach Brian Webb knows his team isn't just a footnote.

Marion humbled at home, 42-14

If the pattern for Marion's football season holds, Maquoketa might be in for a rough night when it faces the Indians next week at home.

After being crushed by Decorah 34-7 two weeks ago, Marion rebounded last week by annihilating Anamosa 58-0.

The Indians were manhandled again Friday night at Thomas Park, this time 42-14 by a tough bunch from Washington, Iowa.

They could be seeking redemption next time out.

Old-fashioned Cougars stuff Rams

Amos Alonzo Stagg and Knute Rockne would have loved the old-fashioned offense being run by Cedar Rapids Kennedy these days.

And on this particular stormy night at Kingston Stadium, those ancient Hall of Fame coaches would have loved Kennedy's defense and special teams as well.

The Cougars parlayed their unique brand of football into a 19-9 victory over Dubuque Senior Thursday in a Mississippi Valley Conference game that began more than an hour late due to lightning and dangerous weather.

Riders claim shootout win at Dubuque

DUBUQUE – The best way to see where you're at on the eve of the season is to skate with the defending Clark Cup champions.

You can only judge so much from preseason results (for reference, see the 2012 Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings, who came from south of Nowhere), but the tape of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' Thursday night exhibition with the arch-rival Dubuque Fighting Saints, showed a confident club outplaying the class of the USHL on its home ice.

Going deep into their energy and intensity well, the RoughRiders tripped Dubuque 3-2 in a shootout on fourth shooter Judd Peterson's low netter and some money relief goaltending by Chris Birdsall at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
