Kernels fall at Peoria on frigid Friday

PEORIA, Ill. - Peoria topped the Kernels, 4-1, Friday afternoon at frigid Peoria Chiefs Stadium in a Midwest League ballgame.

Temperatures were in the 30s, winds were gusting as much as 25 mph and snow flurries even fell from the sky.

Byron Buxton gave the Kernels a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI triple to right-center that scored Jairo Rodriguez. That was one of only four hits the Kernels collected off Chiefs starter Kurt Heyer.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - Started in left field Friday and was 1-for-3 with a double,  RBI and run scored in the Quakes' 8-3 loss to High Desert. Season stats: G - 13, Avg. - .304, AB - 46, H - 14, HR - 2, RBI - 8, SB - 1.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Started at designated hitter Friday and was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored in the Lugnuts' 7-3 loss at Fort Wayne. Season stats: G - 9, Avg. - .233, AB - 30, H - 7, HR - 0, RBI - 2, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Iowa (Cubs)) - Did not play Friday in the I-Cubs' 5-0 win over Nashville. Season stats: G - 10, Avg. - .382, AB - 34, H - 13, HR - 3, RBI - 8, SB - 0.

 

Tony Lombardi resigns at Washington

Tony Lombardi resigned under pressure Thursday as the football and baseball coach at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, effective at the end of the 2012-13 contract year.

Washington High School announced Lombardi's resignation Thursday morning, declaring he resigned for family reasons.

Lombardi will continue to coach the Washington baseball team for the 2013 season.

Lombardi, 51, is currently being investigated by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, which is pursuing a complaint filed by Washington parents who have accused Lombardi of verbal abuse of their children and unprofessional conduct.

No.1 Prairie suffers 2nd straight loss

The fortunes of the Cedar Rapids Prairie boys soccer team have turned as nasty as this week's weather.

After starting out a somewhat surprising 8-0 and gaining a No. 1 state ranking in Class 3A, the Hawks have hit a rough patch. Coming off a 6-0 loss to Iowa City West on Tuesday, Prairie got off to a slow start Thursday afternoon against No. 4 Iowa City High.

The Little Hawks (8-1) got a goal from Fernando Pacheco off a corner just four minutes into the game and added an early second-half tally en route to a 3-1 victory at John Wall Field.

Mount Mercy signs 9 Metro bowlers

The Mount Mercy University bowling program has made great strides in its brief two-year history as a varsity sport.

High school bowlers from the Metro high schools have noticed and want to join.

The Mustangs have signed nine Metro bowlers for the 2013-14 school year, including former girls state champion Tara Trcka from Xavier and JUCO national champion Daniel Healy from Vincennes (Ind.) Junior College and Jefferson High School.
