State wrestling duals will keep same date

The state dual meet wrestling tournament, mired in controversy the past two years, will be held the day before the traditional state tournament again in 2014 and is likely to stay in the same spot for at least several years after that.

Prairie wrestling coach Blake Williams and Linn-Mar coach Doug Streicher, among others, would like to see the state dual meet tournament switched to another date to avoid putting some wrestlers at a competitive disadvantage.

That's not likely to happen anytime soon. Both wrestling tournaments will continue to be piggy-backed at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines for the near future, IHSAA executive director Alan Beste said Tuesday during a stop in Cedar Rapids.

Prairie vaulted five spots to the top of the Class 3A boys soccer poll in rankings released Tuesday by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

The Hawks, undefeated at 8-0, received nine of a possible 10 first-place votes to claim the No.1 spot.

Kennedy, fresh off a 3-0 venture at the West Des Moines Valley Invitational that included a win over the previous No.1 Tigers, received the other first-place vote and is second in the poll. The Cougars (5-0) were ranked 10th last week.

Kernels bitten by Timber Rattlers, 14-2

After being idled by weather-related postponements for four straight days last week, playing two doubleheaders in Clinton over the weekend and facing four more games over the next three days, what Cedar Rapids Kernels Manager Jake Mauer needed on Monday night was a game where he could rest most of his pitching staff to prepare for yet another doubleheader Tuesday night.

What he got, instead, was what the Kernels skipper labeled afterward as, "a good-fashioned (butt) whipping."

The visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers forced Mauer to use four pitchers in a 14-2 thrashing in front of 703 fans on a chilly April night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

No penalties for Linn-Mar wrestling

The Linn-Mar High School wrestling team will not be penalized for withholding many of its varsity wrestlers from the state dual meet tournament in February, Coach Doug Streicher told the Metro Sports Report Monday.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) accepted Linn-Mar's explanation that the varsity wrestlers were withheld from the tournament due to injuries.

The IHSAA investigated whether Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Prairie acted improperly at the state dual meet tournament in Des Moines by not using all of their top guys.
