Kirkwood men clinch 2nd in win over DMACC

BOONE - Kasey Semler scored 27 points and Kirkwood raced past DMACC, 96-86, Saturday afternoon in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference men's basketball.

The win clinched second place for Kirkwood (18-12, 9-5). The Eagles will host NIACC in a first-round regional tournament game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson Hall.

Semler led six Eagles in double figures Saturday. J.C. Fuller added 17, Taylor Olson 14 and Gage Heffernan had 11. Kevin Hunter and Shaun Manego had 10 apiece.

DMACC snaps Eagles' streak at 18

BOONE - DMACC built an 11-point halftime lead and went on to hand No.2 Kirkwood its first conference loss of the season Saturday in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

The loss snapped Kirkwood's winning streak at 18 games in its regular-season finale.

Kirkwood (26-4, 15-1) was led by Kianna Jacobs' 14 points. Alexis Fitzpatrick scored 11. Jacobs also grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists.

The Eagles played without starter Bianca Dufelmeier, who was injured in practice on Thursday.

Singing Saints swinging for 4A title

DES MOINES - Tom Lilly feels like he's got 13 daughters on the Xavier High School basketball team. He loves them all, but sometimes they drive him to distraction.

Take their singing, for instance. They sing before games, they sing after games, they sing on the team bus.

They even sang in the interview room at Wells Fargo Arena Thursday night after they beat No.1 Heelan in the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament, but they were urged into that performance by a television guy and should not be held accountable.

Fontana takes job at Ankeny Centennial

Bob Fontana had several chances to leave Kennedy High School and take another job during his 16 years with the Cougars, but he always turned them down.

Until now.

The lure of coaching in Ankeny, where he grew up and has numerous relatives, was too attractive to pass up.

Fontana, 54, has agreed to become the first boys basketball coach at the new Ankeny Centennial High School, which will open for business for the 2013-14 school year.

Kirkwood softball team opens with split

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Krysta Tutsch hit a three-run homer Friday night as the Kirkwood softball team blanked Grand View, 7-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at the Rochester Dome in Minnesota.

Grand View won the opener, 3-1.

Shyanne Saladino and Sam Belz combined on a five-hit shutout in the nightcap as the sixth-ranked Eagles split their first two games of the year. Saladino pitched five innings and struck out five batters. Belz fanned two batters in two innings.
