Saints stun Heelan, earn shot at title

DES MOINES - Kayla Armstrong and the Xavier Saints shocked the No.1 team in the state Thursday night.

Now the surging Saints will try to claim the No.1 tag for themselves when they play for the Class 4A state basketball title Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Armstrong played the game of her life Thursday as the Saints stunned Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 68-57, in the semifinals with a wire-to-wire performance.

Armstrong poured in a career-high 22 points, collected seven assists, grabbed seven rebounds and made five steals with a relentless effort that would have left the Energizer Bunny gasping for air.

"The game of her life right there," praised Sarah Dickes, Armstrong's running mate in the Xavier backcourt.

The fifth-ranked Saints (16-9) will face eighth-ranked Harlan (23-2) in the 4A finals at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

No.1 West sidelines J-Hawks, 56-27

It was a dejected Ky Kramer who walked out of the Cedar Rapids Jefferson locker room on Thursday night.

The J-Hawk senior guard had just taken off his uniform for the final time following a 56-27 loss to top-ranked Iowa City West in the Class 4A Substate 6 final at Cedar Rapids Prairie.

A three-year regular for Jefferson, Kramer has plenty to be proud over his 73-game career, which included a pair of state tournament trips.

But that didn't mean much to Kramer after his team was manhandled by the defending state champions.

No.6 Kirkwood softball expects big things

Kirkwood softball coach Joe Yegge needed to replenish his roster this season, so he went out and signed seven players who were all-state in high school last year.

They are part of a talented freshman class that includes 14 players who were either all-state, all-conference or all-region in 2012.

They'll join five sophomores who helped the Eagles compile a 42-13 record last year and finish seventh at the national tournament.

Kirkwood was ranked No.6 in the preseason poll this season and will open the campaign with a doubleheader against Grand View Friday night in the Rochester Dome in Rochester, Minn.

No.5 Saints hold off No.7 Lewis Central

DES MOINES - Xavier High School seniors Sarah Dickes and Kayla Armstrong know what it's like to perform on a big stage and win state titles.

They helped the Saints win their seventh state soccer title in a row last year, an unprecedented accomplishment in IGHSAU history, and now they are two victories away from reaching the top in girls basketball.

Dickes scored 13 points and made four key free throws in the final 19.7 seconds Wednesday as No.5 Xavier held off No.7 Council Bluffs Lewis Central, 50-45, in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
