Wempen tops No.1 guy at state wrestling

DES MOINES -- Linn-Mar sophomore Matt Wempen is a defending state wrestling champion, but he faced a daunting task in the quarterfinals of the state meet Friday morning when he met the top-ranked man in his class.

No worries.

Wempen handed Bryce Meyer of Fort Madison his first loss of the season, 3-0, to reach the 113-pound semifinals Friday night and move within two wins of claiming his second title in two years.

Wempen knew Meyer was ranked No.1 in the state, but it didn't seem to faze him.

Highland ends Cedar Valley's season, 81-70

RIVERSIDE - Cedar Valley Christian School assistant basketball coach Dick Hodge sounded like a coach who actually gave a hoot after his team's Class 1A district tournament basketball game at Highland High School Thursday night.

His team did, too.

The problem was stopping Highland senior Jake Hootman, who scored a career-high 33 points in an 81-70 win.
