City High upsets Saints

Iowa City High pulled off a mild upset Thursday night when it downed Xavier, 55-50, in a boys basketball regular season finale at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Iowa City High (8-13, 4-12 MVC) had three players score in double figures. Lonnie Chester had 15 points, Torry Perry 13, and Ladarius Taylor chipped in with 11.

“Our team had a lot of energy and effort," said Chester. " We played hard.  Gave great effort.”

Controversies erupt at state tourney

DES MOINES - Controversy was piled upon controversy at the state dual meet wrestling tournament Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Linn-Mar Lions defied a state edict to use their top lineup, got clobbered by Waverly-Shell Rock in the first round  and face possible sanctions from the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

The Prairie Hawks used their best guys in the opening round and beat Dowling Catholic, but their worst fears were realized when 106-pounder Sam Uthoff suffered a knee injury that put his status in doubt for the individual state tournament that starts Thursday.

Linn-Mar girls upset Prairie, 53-51

Defense.

Rebounding.

Execution.

Those were the keys to Linn-Mar's upset victory Wednesday night when the Lions stunned Prairie, 53-51, in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A regional girls basketball tournament at Prairie.

Alexis Libenguth scored a career-high 23 points to lead Linn-Mar (11-12) into Saturday's semifinals against Cedar Rapids Washington at the Warriors' gym. The game tips at 7 p.m.

Cougars down J-Hawks a 3rd time

Kennedy hosted crosstown rival Jefferson in a Class 5A regional quarterfinal girls basketball tournament game Wednesday night and used the long ball to shoot down the J-Hawks, 58-50.

In beating Jefferson for the third time this season, Kennedy (15-7) advances to play Waterloo West (15-6) in Saturday's regional semifinals at West. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

“We are looking for a tough game in Waterloo this weekend,” said Coach Tony Vis. “We got them by nine earlier this year, but we can’t take them for granted.”

Led by Madi Meier’s school record seven 3-pointers, the Cougars knocked down 10 bombs to go with only nine two-point baskets and 10 free throws to defeat Jefferson.

Solon girls oust Indians from tourney

The Solon girls knocked down 8 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and beat Marion, 64-50, Wednesday in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal basketball game.

Solon (11-11) advances to play Cedar Rapids Xavier in a semifinal round game Saturday night at Xavier.

Marion (13-9) had one fewer field goal than Solon, but the Indians struggled at the free-throw line, making only 5 of 16 charity tosses.
