Mount Mercy men eclipse 100 again

The Mount Mercy men's basketball team topped 100 points for the second  straight game Saturday and dunked Maranatha Baptist, 105-58, in a  non-conference affair at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs (2-0) defeated Viterbo, 107-84, in their opener Thursday  and have come out of the gate swinging.

Mike Evans led Mount Mercy with 14 points and eight rebounds. Dennis  McKinney matched Evans for scoring honors with 14 markers.

KCC women cannot get out of Dodge

SEDALIA, Mo. - The Kirkwood women's basketball team has begun the  season with two straight losses to NJCAA Division I ballclubs.

The Eagles lost to Dodge City Community College, 66-57, in the second  round of the State Fair Classic Saturday and left the tournament  empty-handed.

Kirkwood fell to Butler Community College, 45-30, in their opener  Friday. Kirkwood is an NJCAA Division II school, with less scholarship  money than Division I outfits like Butler and Dodge City.

Wilson powers No. 5 Eagles in opener

WEST BURLINGTON - Doug Wilson played like an All-American Friday and powered the fifth-ranked Kirkwood Eagles to an 86-71 victory over Illinois Central in the first round of The Broadway Classic.

Wilson, a second team All-American last season, collected 28 points, 13 rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists as the Eagles won  their season opener.

Allante Pickens and Connor Kasperbauer tossed in 14 points apiece for Kirkwood. Luke Appel contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Devonte Thedford and Brady Sartorius added eight points for the Eagles.

No. 2 KCC women smothered, 45-30

SEDALIA, Mo. - The Kirkwood women's basketball team suffered through one of the worst offensive performances in school history Friday.

The Eagles were smothered by Butler Community College, 45-30, in the opening round of the State Fair Classic.

Kirkwood is ranked No. 2 in NJCAA Division II, while Butler is ranked No. 16 in NJCAA Division I.

The Eagles made only 8 of 54 shots from the field for 14.8 percent. They were 3 of 25 on 3-pointers for 12 percent.

Hampton sparks Mustangs in opener

CANTON, Mo. - Aurianna Hampton came off the bench Friday to spark the Mount Mercy women's basketball team.

Hampton scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Mustangs defeated Saint Ambrose, 69-58, in their season opener at the Culver-Stockton tournament in Missouri.

Hampton did all her damage in 20 minutes off the bench.

Brianna Thomas collected 11 points and six rebounds for the Mustangs. Audrey Mulumba contributed eight points and six rebounds. Chelsey Lampe also scored eight points.
