Cedar Valley boys roll past Unity Christian

The Cedar Valley Christian boys played a couple of games early in the season when the 35-point rule came into play and the clock ran  continuously.

They lost both times by big scores.

On Saturday night in the first of their two home games this season, however, the Huskies jumped all over Unity Christian of Fulton, Ill., 64-31, with the clocking running at the end.

Prairie crowns 4 champs at Geneseo

GENESEO, Ill. - Prairie crowned four champions and claimed the title Saturday at the Geneseo Invitational wrestling meet.

The meet ran Friday and Saturday. Prairie totaled 232.5 points. Waverly-Shell Rock was second with 207. Kennedy finished eighth with 88.

Prairie's champions were Josh Wenger at 113, Zach Witte at 152, Austin Gould at 182 and Andrew Netolicky at 220.

Kennedy's Luke Kremer won the 132-pound weight class.

McCrary lifts Prairie by Xavier, 42-40

As it always is, the losing coach talked about what his team did wrong and the winning coach about what his team did right.

The fact is, both the 4A ninth-ranked Prairie and the eighth-ranked Xavier played well enough to win Friday night in the Hawk gym. Or just poorly enough to lose.

It came down to Prairie having the ball last and Courteney McCrary sinking a clutch 10-foot floater with time expiring to lift the Hawks to a 42-40 girls basketball victory in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

"We showed a lack of patience on offense," said Saints Coach Tom Lilly. "We just threw up some ill-advised shots. That's a recipe for disaster."

Prairie Coach Steve Doser, on the other hand, couldn't have been more pleased with his team's performance.

Lions turn back pesky Warriors, 63-45

For three quarters Friday night, Cedar Rapids Washington looked nothing like a team in search of its first win.

In the fourth quarter, Linn-Mar looked very much like the fifth-ranked Class 4A team in Iowa.

The Lions held a precarious 41-35 lead entering the fourth quarter, but took command behind all-state point guard Marcus Paige and pulled away for a 63-45 victory at Linn-Mar.

Paige finished with a game-high 24 points, but it wasn't a vintage performance from the North Carolina signee. He struggled with his shot through three quarters. In the fourth, he netted 13 points, including all seven of his free throw attempts.
