Derby leaving UI is no surprise

I was not surprised by the fact that A.J. Derby decided to ask for his scholarship release from Iowa so he could transfer and continue his dream of playing college football as a quarterback.

Iowa is not going to have the services of a fine athlete, simply because the cupboard at Iowa is full of waiting quarterbacks after James Vandenberg's senior season in 2012 and Derby apparently was not going to get a chance to play his favorite spot.

Womochil resigns at Jeff; denies ISU talk

Jim Womochil resigned as the head football coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School Friday, but said he might return to the J-Hawks next season as an assistant coach.

"I'm going to be working in football someplace, somewhere, somehow," he said. "It could even be here. I'm not ruling that out."

Womochil, 45, compiled a 22-78 record in 11 years at Jefferson and leaves the job with a 22-game losing streak, the longest among 4A schools in the state.

He denied rumors that he'll succeed Bob Elliott as the new defensive backfield coach at Iowa State. "I can tell you that's false. That's definitely false," he remarked.

Taylor Jacobson's season for J-Hawks is over

Taylor Jacobson will miss the rest of the season with the Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls basketball team due to lingering problems with a sprained ankle.

Jacobson, a 5-foot-9 junior, averaged 10.2 points in parts of five games for the J-Hawks, but her scoring average was deflated due to limited minutes in some outings.

"She's done," Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer said Friday. "It's a real bummer for any kid like that. It's just a sad deal."

Gould lifts No. 4 Hawks by No. 6 Lions

Austin Gould has the early stages of cauliflower ear, so he wrapped tape around his head and over his ears Thursday night to protect them before tugging on his headgear.

"It makes him look tough, I guess," said Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling coach Blake Williams, who was all smiles when he said it.

With all that tape, Gould was able to block out the fans who were yelling and screaming during his pivotal 182-pound match against Linn-Mar senior Mark Atwater.

Gould blanked Atwater, 3-0, in the final bout to give Prairie a 26-24 comeback victory over the Lions in a premier Mississippi Valley Conference meet at the Prairie gym.

Kremer, Williams help Cougars flatten foes

Luke Kremer and Shane Williams had a pair of pins apiece to lead Kennedy to a pair of wins Thursday night in Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling at Kennedy.

The Cougars whipped Dubuque Wahlert, 46-26, then held off Iowa City High, 40-33.

Kremer pinned Wahlert's Charlie Smith in 3:03 at 132 pounds, then moved up to 138 and flattened City High's Deven Duarte in 3:36.
