Wes Washpun enjoys life at Tennessee

He's been to Maui, faced Duke on ESPN and played before 17,000 fans at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Yes indeed, Wes Washpun likes Tennessee just fine.

"It's been going really well so far," the former Cedar Rapids Washington star told the Metro Sports Report. "I'm getting into the flow of games, I'm starting to figure out how this whole college basketball thing works, find my niche, find out where I fit on the team and how I can help them win."

Mahmens switching from Duluth to Dubuque

Mac Mahmens likes the idea of moving closer to home and playing on the same college football team with his brother.

That's why he's decided to transfer from the University of Minnesota-Duluth to the University of Dubuque, where he'll begin classes in January.

"Seven-and-a-half hours from home is a little far for me," he said. "I thought I could do it, but it's been a little rough the first semester."

Mahmens was an all-state lineman at Linn-Mar High School in 2010 and received a scholarship to Duluth, where he thought he'd get to play as a true freshman this season for one of the top Division II programs in the country. Instead, he was redshirted and buried on the depth chart at center.

Tyler Sievertsen named All-American by TSN

CEDAR FALLS - Cedar Rapids Kennedy graduate Tyler Sievertsen has been named an All-American placekicker for the second time in two weeks for his work at Northern Iowa this season.

Sievertsen, a sophomore, was named a second team FCS All-American Monday by The Sports Network. He led UNI in scoring with 93 points, hitting 18 of 20 field goals and 39 of 39 PATs.

Sievertsen was named a third team FCS All-American by the Associated Press last week.

Xavier's Boland has perfect day on mat

Jack Boland was a rugged 215-pound linebacker for the Xavier High School football team this season. Now he's a rugged 182-pound wrestler, about six weeks later.

Same tough kid.

Boland enjoyed a strong performance at the Doug Philipp Duals Saturday at Xavier with three pins and a technical fall. He also won a match by forfeit to go 5-0.

Some people who shed 30 pounds in a relatively short period of time might feel weak and lethargic. Not Boland. He looks strong, aggressive and ready to wrestle.
