Schemmel laments split with Waterloo West

Xavier Coach Dave Schemmel is an old-school baseball guy and a gentleman. He'd never do anything to demean an opponent, but facts were facts Wednesday night.

His Saints played a struggling, weakened team from Waterloo West and had to settle for a split of their Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill at Ken Charipar Field.

Schemmel was not happy.

"We should have come out of it with two wins," he said. "It's a little frustrating, and they didn't have three of their starters. You hope to take two from the teams you think you should beat."

Waterloo West won the first game, 9-8, in eight innings. Xavier took the nightcap, 16-6, in six innings.

Sampson shines at shortstop for Saints, but she'll run track in college

Tyler Sampson likes softball and is an outstanding shortstop for Xavier High School, but her days on the softball diamond are starting to dwindle away.

Sampson has accepted a scholarship to run track at Western Illinois University, so her softball career will end in July with the end of the high school season.

She'll report to college in Macomb, Ill., in August and specialize in the sprints at Western Illinois.

"I just like running," Sampson said Tuesday after the Saints split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Iowa City High at Bob Erusha Field. "I like the school, it's a good distance from home, and they have my major and everything."

The Saints (9-4, 8-4) and Little Hawks (6-9, 5-5) played two tight games. Xavier won the opener, 3-1, and Iowa City High grabbed the nightcap, 3-2, in 10 innings.

Sampson plans to major in physical education at Western Illinois, which makes sense. She's been a four-sport athlete at Xavier and won 15 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, track and softball.

Bats are back, J-Hawks sweep Senior

Four innings into Tuesday's first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader between Jefferson and Dubuque Senior it looked like the J-Hawks were going to need to sneak out another close game as their offense was again silent.

That all changed in the fifth inning when the J-Hawks' bats came back to life. Jefferson scored five runs in the final two innings, capped off by a four-run sixth for a 6-2 win. Juniors Carson Burgart and Rachel Sedlacek sealed the win with back-to-back home runs in the sixth.

The J-Hawks continued to hammer the ball in the nightcap to complete the sweep, winning 12-2 in five innings.

“I am seeing the ball well and have more confidence at the plate since the Xavier game,” Sedlacek said. The eighth-ranked J-Hawks swept Xavier on June 7 and Sedlacek was 5-for-9 with a pair of home runs.

She hit two more home runs Tuesday and was 4-for-7 with five RBIs. Burgart broke out of a slump and was 4-for-6.

Davila tosses wild no-hitter for Marion

WEST LIBERTY - Josh Davila tossed a no-hitter for the Marion Indians Tuesday night, but he did it the hard way.

Davila walked eight batters during his no-hitter as Marion belted West Liberty, 16-1, in six innings in the first game of a doubleheader.

Marion won the second game, 13-3, in five innings.

Zach Nielsen went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Indians (7-8) in the first game. Kasey Semler went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Trev Biery was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Davila was 3-for-3 and Mitch Wagner hit a home run.

Quinn Cannoy made his first start for the varsity in the nightcap and pitched a complete game for Marion. Nielsen drove in three runs and Wagner had two RBIs.
