KCC volleyball sweeps 2 matches

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - The Kirkwood volleyball team swept both of its matches at the Waubonsee Tournament Saturday to finish the event with a 3-1 record.

The Eagles cruised by South Suburban, 25-10, 25-13, 25-20, and blanked Illinois Valley, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16.

Alexa Ingram led a balanced attack at the net with 19 kills in the two matches. Sam Johnson collected 18 kills, Haleigh Durnin 13, Abbi Tunis 13 and Maddie Huff 10.

Lauren Keane rolled up 54 assists in the two matches.

Mustangs win 2 volleyball matches

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Mount Mercy women's volleyball team won both of its matches at a tournament in the Chicago suburbs Saturday to finish the event with a 3-1 record.

The Mustangs blanked St. Francis (Ill.), 25-18, 25-15, 25-20, and rallied to defeat Trinity Lutheran, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-17.

Alyssa Weldon led a balanced attack for Mount Mercy with 25 kills, including 12 kills against St. Francis and 13 against Trinity Christian. Maddie Bell, Becca Thomson and Olivia Coe all had 17 kills for the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy kicks Viterbo, 9-0

Souleymane Diallo and Rafael Passanha scored two goals apiece Saturday as the Mount Mercy men's soccer team booted Viterbo, 9-0, at the Plaster Athletic Complex in Cedar Rapids.

Sava Dragic, Duarte Leite, Nikola Petrovic, Matheus Alonso and Oguzhan Bozkan also scored for the Mustangs. Timon Weidmann had two assists.

Matias da Fonseca was in goal for the entire 90 minutes for Mount Mercy.

IWSL joins Softball Hall of Fame weekend

Players from the Iowa Women's Softball League will play an exhibition game this Saturday as part of the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame  weekend at Ellis Park.

The exhibition game will feature 22 players from the IWSL and is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. on Diamond 1.

"We are honored to be participating in the Hall of Fame weekend," said IWSL director Jim Ecker. "We greatly appreciation the invitation from the Hall of Fame committee to showcase our college softball league before the local softball community."

The Iowa Women's Softball League, founded in 2017, will be entering its third year in 2019 with an Eastern Division in Cedar Rapids and a Central Division in Indianola.

The Softball Hall of Fame weekend begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the start of a 16-inch slo-pitch tournament. The 12-team field  features many of the top teams in the state, including Westside Lounge  of Cedar Rapids, Stadium Bar & Grill from Cedar Rapids, Old Timers Tavern & Blitz from Marshalltown, and Chuck's from Des Moines.

Kirkwood spikes No. 10 Sauk Valley

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - The Kirkwood women's volleyball tournament upset 10th-ranked Sauk Valley, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23, 25-9, at the Waubonsee Tournament in the Chicago suburbs Friday.

The Eagles lost to Moraine Valley, 3-1, in their other match.

Lauren Keane rolled up 96 assists in the two matches and Alexa Ingram had 38 kills.

Keane collected 49 assists in the upset victory over Sauk Valley. Ingram contributed 21 kills and seven digs. Maddie Huff had 13 kills. Abbi Tunis provided 10 kills and four blocks. Sam Johnson chipped in with seven kills and nine digs. Haleigh Durnin had six kills and five blocks. Maddie Lavenz had six digs.
