National signing day thoughts

As the snow comes down and we look forward to several days of non-stop media talk about how bad things are around Eastern Iowa, we must keep in mind one piece of good news.

At least with a blizzard, nature's weatherman, the groundhog, will not be seeing his shadow! Only four more weeks of winter. Of course, that also counts the inevitable bad weather that occurs during the week of the Girls state basketball tournament!

Now, back to sports.

This time of the year, many people turn their attention toward the topic of national signing day and how their favorite school came out in the annual stampede for the country’s top talent. I also keep track of how the local colleges and universities make out on the first Wednesday of February, but to a lesser extent.

I am more interested in how the Metro area does on signing day -- how many kids sign, both with top Division I programs and with local smaller colleges to keep those athletic juices flowing for two or four more years. Not only are football players signing on the dotted line, but so are assorted other sports. Basketball comes later in April.

Marion's Fisher opts for Upper Iowa

Marion High School senior Tyler Fisher has accepted an offer to play football at Upper Iowa University next season.

Fisher played quarterback and linebacker for the Indians last fall, but he prefers defense and was recruited as a linebacker.

"I've always liked defense," he said. "I'm kind of that type of guy."

Fisher, 6-foot-2, weighs 205 pounds, but he'd like to reach 225 by the time he joins the Peacocks.

Fisher made 96 tackles in 10 games for Marion last season. He also passed for 883 yards and rushed for 232 yards for the Indians, who finished 7-3 and made the Class 3A playoffs.

Kiah Stokes leads state in scoring

Linn-Mar senior Kiah Stokes leads the state in scoring, but Virginia Johnson of Iowa City High is nipping at her heels.

Stokes, a 6-foot-3 center who has signed with UConn, is averaging 24.9 points for the second-ranked Lions. Johnson, who has signed with Iowa, is averaging 23.4 points.

Stokes also ranks third in the state in rebounding (14.7) and fourth in blocked shots (4.8), according to the IGHSAU.

Open enrollment has been relatively harmless

Between my junior and senior year in high school, my family moved from the west side of Cedar Rapids to the east side. Naturally, I wanted to finish at Jefferson with my friends rather than go one year to Kennedy.

Since I wasn’t a high profile athlete (bench warmer in basketball, sometime scorer on the golf team), there was little problem staying at Jefferson for my senior year. A guidance counselor and former neighbor of our family handled the request with no paperwork or superintendent approval.

Had I been a Mr. Basketball candidate or a four-star football recruit, Kennedy might have balked, claiming I lived only a few blocks from 42nd Street and Wenig Road. But that wasn’t the case.
