This is the golden age of Metro basketball

Note to Cedar Rapids Metro basketball fans: Make no mistake about it, you are living in the golden age of outstanding basketball in the Metro area.

With numerous teams rated in the top 10, with Division I scholarship athletes playing all over the place, this should be your time to enjoy the high school game, whichever school you like to follow. Or just go to a game that you don't have an interest in, just to see the caliber of basketball that's being played in the Metro area these days.

Cougars-Lions work OT in bowling

Kennedy had to work overtime to finally beat Linn-Mar Friday afternoon in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls bowling meet at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

The score was tied, 2625-2625, at the end of regulation, so an extra Baker round game was rolled. Each of the five bowlers on each team rolled a pair of frames in alternate fashion.  The meet was still up for grabs after Kennedy's Paige Ermer left a 7-10 split in her final frame. Linn-Mar's Stacey Schwarzenstein needed two strikes, plus pins on a third ball, to give the Lions the victory. She knocked down all but the 10 pin and Kennedy escaped with a 15-pin victory.

Ermer led the Cougars (5-1, 5-1 MVC) with a 206 high game and 403 high series.  Schwarzenstein topped all bowlers with games of 222 and 234 for a 456 series. Linn-Mar is 3-3, 3-3.

Late run lifts Lions past Warriors

The Kiah vs. Tia Show fizzled Thursday night.

Kiah Stokes, Linn-Mar's star player, missed four crucial free throws in the final 15 seconds. Tia Dawson, Washington's top player, fouled out and scored only four points.

It was not an instant classic, but Linn-Mar found a way to win a ballgame.  As usual.

The third-ranked Lions scored the last six points of the game on free throws and escaped No. 5 Washington, 44-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference defensive battle at Washington.

Stokes finished with 18 points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots, so it's not like the prep All-American had a terrible game, but she missed eight free throws and shot 4-for-11 from the field, well below her normal field-goal rate of 71.4 percent.

No guarantees for Metro boys teams

Todd Tharp is the answer to your question.

He's the official at the Iowa High School Athletic Association who's in charge of making the Class 4A substate assignments for boys basketball this season.

It's not an easy job. He's got to study the teams and geography, then find an equitable solution that makes it possible for the best eight clubs to reach the state tournament.

There are 48 teams in Class 4A. The IHSAA will announce the eight substate assignments on Monday, but will wait until Feb. 7 or Feb. 8 to announce the pairings. It's a two-step process.

Six teams will be assigned to each substate on Monday, but they won't know who they'll play until two weeks after that. That gives Tharp more time to analyze results, seed teams and set the games.

Cougars dominate J-Hawks on the mat

Kennedy broke out the white singlets for its Senior Night meet against Jefferson.

It was not a white flag of surrender.

Kennedy routed Jefferson, 45-25, Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling meet at Kennedy.

Kennedy won the first seven matches before forfeiting to Jefferson’s Conner Herman at 215. The J-Hawks’ Riley Welsh pinned Jake Dunne at heavyweight and Griffin Bollman received a forfeit at 103.

Kennedy won eight of the matches contested, Jefferson three.

Key matches for Kennedy included 145-pound senior Logan Kubovec winning over Dylan Moenck, 6-2.

“I just wanted to dominate—he beat me before earlier in the year,” said Kubovec. “I wanted to give the crowd what they came to see.”
