Manning, Trcka earn MVC honors

Kennedy's Jake Manning and Xavier's Tara Trcka were two of the six Mississippi Valley Conference Athletes of the Week announced Monday.

Manning, a 6-foot-5 senior, scored 30 points in a pair of conference wins that kept Kennedy in second place in the Mississippi Division boys basketball race. Included was 21 points against Prairie that helped raise his league scoring average to 12-plus points per game.

Trcka, a sophomore bowler for Xavier, torched the lanes last Friday, rolling games of 267 and 247 for a 514 series that led the Saints past Washington. The 514 is the second-highest series by a conference girls bowler this season. She boosted her season average to 212.

Jarrod Uthoff leads state in scoring

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Jarrod Uthoff leads the state in scoring at 25.9 points per game.

Marshall Dolch of Villisca is second in the state at 24.6 points and Trey Sathoff of Pekin is third at 24.1 points, according to the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

Uthoff leads the Metro in scoring (25.9), rebounding (140) and blocked shots (46). He ranks third in free throw shooting (83.2 percent), fourth in field goal percentage (59.6), seventh in 3-pointers (16) and ninth in steals (21).

Garcia 'Outstanding;' IC West overwhelming

Amid all the grim-faced and tight-lipped wrestlers at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament Saturday stood A.J. Garcia, the 215-pounder from Linn-Mar.

He was all smiles.

Garcia upset top-ranked Conner Herman of Cedar Rapids Jefferson to win the 215-pound crown and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the 14-team field at Xavier.

"I was ready to go for that match," he said. "It's a real big accomplishment for me."

Garcia dominated Herman, 9-3, in the biggest upset of the day, handing Herman his only loss of the season to a fellow 215-pounder.

"I'm building my way up toward state," said Garcia. "This is going to motivate me."

Marion's Hunter wins Wamac title

MANCHESTER -- Marion's Alex Hunter scored a 7-6 decision over Haven Muller of Maquoketa to win the 119-pound title Saturday at the Wamac Conference wrestling tournament.

Hunter was the only Marion wrestler to reach the finals. The Indians finished 12th in the team race with 55 points.

Scout Morehouse finished fourth at 112 and Hunter Banes won three straight matches after getting pinned in his first bout at 145.

Host West Delaware was the winner with 235 points. The Hawks had three champions and two runnersup. Williamsburg also had three champs and two runnersup but finished second with 211.5 points. Independence (161.5), Western Dubuque (147) and DeWitt Central (100.5) rounded out the top five.

J-Hawks net special win in 2OTs

The heroes for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson basketball team posed for a picture Friday night after the J-Hawks topped Washington, 58-50, in double-overtime.

There was Jarrod Uthoff, who joined Jefferson's 1,000-point club with another big outing. There was Tyler Meiborg, who played a key role for the J-Hawks with his scoring and leadership. And there was 6-year-old Max Meiborg, Tyler's nephew, who is a cancer survivor and a courageous young boy.

Max was one of the honorary ballboys for this special Coaches vs. Cancer affair, and he was extremely proud of his uncle and Uthoff after Jefferson's victory.

The feelings were mutual.
