Jans fired by Bowling Green

Bowling Green State University men’s basketball coach Chris Jans has been fired, the university announced Thursday.

Jans coached Kirkwood Community College to the NJCAA national title in 1998.

“Jans was terminated following an investigation into his recent public conduct,” the university said in a release. “The university concluded that Jans’ public conduct failed to meet his obligations as a head coach and the expectations that BGSU Athletics has for its coaches.”

Jans, who just completed his first season with Bowling Green, led the Falcons to a 21-12 record and a second-round appearance in the Mid-American Conference tournament.

He was hired under a six-year contract worth $325,000 per year in March 2014.

Under Jans, Bowling Green won its first postseason game in 40 years with a first-round win over Saint Francis (Pa.) in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Jans, who came to Bowling Green from Wichita State, was the first coach in Bowling Green men’s basketball history to win 20 games in his first season with the Falcons.

Bowling Green will immediately begin its search for a new head coach. Assistant Mark Downey will take over the day-to-day operations and lead the program during the search.

The university says it will have no further comment on the matter.
