Cubs designate Sweeney for assignment

The Chicago Cubs finalized their 25-man roster Sunday, designating Cedar Rapids native Ryan Sweeney for assignment just before the season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Sweeney, 30, is owed $1.5 million this year as well as $500,000 for a buyout.

For his career, Sweeney is a .276 hitter with 23 home runs and 224 RBIs. He was originally drafted in the second round of the 2003 draft  by the Chicago White Sox. Sweeney, an outfielder, has played in the majors with the White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox and the Cubs.
