J-Hawks give away a win at Waterloo

WATERLOO -- Jefferson clutched defeat from the jaws of victory Friday evening against Waterloo East.

The J-Hawks beat the Trojans 11-4 in the first game of the Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader and were headed toward a sweep, carrying a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap.

But two J-Hawk errors led to five unearned runs and East rallied for a 6-5 win.

Jefferson (15-21, 13-13) had 25 hits in the doubleheader. The J-Hawks rapped out 15 hits in the opener, three each by Dylan Jellison and Christian Knox, and two apiece for Chance Tiedtke, Colten Jourdan and Sam Techau. Jellison and Layne Sullivan had two RBIs apiece.

East (7-30, 5-21) held a 4-3 lead after four innings. Jefferson scored four runs in the fifth, all unearned, and added three more in the sixth to blow the game open.

Jordan Dee scattered eight hits in a complete game effort. He walked only one and struck out two.

Austin Goodell's two-run home run staked Jefferson to 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap. The J-Hawks tallied three times in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Ben Koering's two-run single highlighted the frame.

Dylan Wright worked six strong innings for the J-Hawks, but was victimized by his defense in the seventh. A lead-off single and back-to-back errors loaded the bases with no one out. Alex Schutte fouled out before Zach Howard's single drove in a run and chased Wright from the game.

Jellison entered the fray and was greeted with an RBI single by Dakota Scribner that cut the J-Hawks' lead to 5-3. Jakob Faith then delivered a two-run single that tied the game.

With the winning run at third base, Jefferson pulled its infield in to cut off the run at the plate. East's John Magnuson hit a scorcher that Jeff shortstop Ky Kramer picked on one hop. He held the runner at third and got the runner at second for the second out of the inning.

East's Bryce Frost then flared a fly ball that Tiedtke, the J-Hawks' left fielder, dove for but was unable to catch.

Jefferson plays its final home game Saturday when it hosts Burlington in a sophomore/varsity doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m. It is senior night.
