Kennedy High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Young Cougars swept by No.1 Ankeny

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team may have the youngest pitching rotation in Class 4A this year.

Coach Bret Hoyer has three sophomores and a freshman in the four-man rotation, a highly unusual situation for the Cougars, but the kids have done all right.

The young Cougars battled top-ranked Ankeny in a doubleheader at the Kennedy field Tuesday night and were saddled with a pair of losses, 7-4 and 6-1, but Hoyer likes what he's seen of his Kiddie Corps on the mound this year.

Surging Cougars sweep No.10 Saints

Two teams that had been gathering momentum in June collided Monday night in the Battle of 42nd Street at Kennedy High School.

Kennedy kept its momentum. Xavier lost theirs.

The surging Cougars swept the No.10 Saints, 2-1 in nine innings and 4-3, in a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill.

Both games were well-pitched, but the opener was truly a pitching duel between Xavier’s Mitch Keller and Kennedy’s Zack Daniels (who gave way to David King in the ninth).

Lions and Cougars split in softball

In a softball battle between buddies Monday night, it came out even.

Linn-Mar pitcher Alexis Kelsey had scouted best friend Ashley Hamilton’s Kennedy team last week and said she knew exactly how to throw to them.

“They weren’t hitting the outside pitch,” Kelsey said after tossing a three-hitter in a 7-0 romp over the Cougars in the first game of a doubleheader Monday at Linn-Mar.

Hamilton, though, had two of those hits. And she came back with three more in the nightcap to lead Kennedy to a 3-1 payback win.

Improved Cougars trim Ottumwa, 6-5

The Kennedy High School baseball team began the season with few players with any varsity experience. As June ends, it is clear they could be building for a strong finish.

Hosting Ottumwa for a non-conference battle Thursday night, the Cougars banged out 10 hits for a 6-5 victory.

Jared Staton drove in Zach Daniels in the bottom of the sixth to break a 5-5 ballgame and David King pitched the seventh inning to save the victory for Sammy Lizarraga.

Surging Warriors split with Cougars

Kennedy upended by No.2 IC West

IOWA CITY - It took a month, but the eight-run lead Iowa City West built in the first inning proved more than Kennedy could overcome.
